I removed my side steps today, and I recommend you remove them too. Really easy just used a 10mm socket. They were rusted really bad and even had sand on them. Luckily they didn't damage my frame too bad. If I bought new I never would of had them put on.

They protect the sides and rear 4 1/4 painted flares from stone damage off the front tyres and I suppose that is why they were standard on all models with wider painted flares? They also have the Sahara pattern on them so were originaly meant for the Sahara models, my 65th came with them standard because of the Sahara flares, I have never stepped on mine I step over them but was advised to keep them because of the wider painted flares but cant see a use for them with regular flares other than for show.
Also clean them up don't throw them away as I predict people will want them again in the future as trends change from hi lifts and oversized tyres.

Why do you recommend that I remove mine? I usually step over them, but I use them occasionally. And I would have to go wheeling without my wife if I removed them. I've had them off, they're in great shape, almost no rust. I think they look fine on there. I recommend you put yours back on. :)

I sold the set off my 99 Sahara for $100 in 2018, and haven't been able to give the set away that I took off my 06. Go figure.

Handy for tying down on roof racks as well.

Trend! Almost everyone wants their TJ to look like a Rubicon on steroids which is ok if you are regularly wheeling and mods are for purpose but its just a trendy tough appearance for those who dont, trends tend to change back to original once a vehicle reaches classic and above status. so I would keep them they aint costing anything :)

Since they've been putting high lifts and big tires on Jeeps since back in the CJ days, I'm not sure I'll live long enough to see this trend change.
When I went to flat fenders, I traded my flares and side steps for a case of beer. I live in my motor home, so I didn't have room to drag them around with me.

Good for you. It's causes rust on the frame for a lot of people

You answered your own question. 🤫 My wife said she couldn't climb in my old Jeep without the steps, after I lifted it and put 35s on. I told her to get into better shape and stretch more. I sold them for $30.
