Can a 2003 TJ 4.0 tow a 2500 lb boat? My buddy wants to get a Jeep and he has a boat that he needs to be towed. Any experiences or advice you can share would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

X2, no! Its wheelbase isn't long enough to control anything that heavy. An Unlimited LJ? No problem. A short wheelbase TJ? Nope. Really.

Towing a heavy boat behind a TJ would eventually teach him the meaning of 'the tail wagging the dog'.

As advised above over the road is a accident looking for a victim, but it can move a 2500# trailered boat from the house a few miles down the road to the lake if that's the intent.

Until he is on a twisty road one mile later and has to jam on his brakes and try to perform an emergency maneuver. Then it'll look like the situation in post #5 above.

Jerry, you ever seen those Mexican Convoys? Cars towing cars overloaded with USA junk headed back to Mexico to sell for $$$. I see them all over the country. Never have seen any of them ever crash.

Know what you are driving and drive accordingly. It aint rocket surgery.

I really don't give a fuck what other drivers do that is unsafe. What Mexican convoy drivers, idiots, drunks, do is nothing we should be accepting of or condoning just because you/we/I haven't witnessed any of them having crashed or killed people.

Strawman argument. Know what you are driving and drive accordingly.

Strangest arguments condoning what anyone chooses to do on the road that I've ever seen. You might condone all that and say it's their business but I certainly don't agree with you.

no way I'd tow my 21ft bass boat with surge brakes on the road with my TJ. but if I lived in one of those subdivisions on a lake with its own boat ramp I would and not get over about 35MPH. TJ is too short and light to pull anything with weight behind it. years ago I had a 16ft bass boat push a 80's suburban into the car in front of me, I was only doing 55 and it was wet, but if that little boat could push a suburban think what a bigger boat behind a little old jeep will do !

No reason to push manufacturer specifications. I think people push the envelope when sticking to the ground, but I'd imagine they wouldn't push weight or size limitations in a boat or in a plane... 🤔

I was towing a 1000lb utility trailer with an 800lb Harley on it with my YJ (factory tow rating 2000lb). Some stupid Karen stopped in front of me at a green light. I had the brakes locked up on the Jeep and I could feel that trailer pushing me into her Suburban.

I don't worry about me driving for the conditions, I worry about what the other guy is going to do unexpectedly.
