Sailors don't, as a general rule, get little rifles like soldiers and Marines. We get big rifles. As in the 12" / 50 cal and 6" / 47 cal naval rifles seen below. These used actual shells, not bagged powder and had rifled barrels. Yes, they are rifles, and as the Germans, N. Koreans, and VC learned, very accurate.

Are those shell casings laying all over the deck? Man, you sailors should collect your brass...🙂
 
Poor Navy, nowadays you don't even get those awesome canons. Now it's all some SWO lobbing Tomahawks from half-way around the world. They even bother with small arms training at Basic anymore?
