DIY hardtop storage

I'm looking for someone to post the best DIY hardtop storage options. I'm on a tight budget and garage space is limited so a hoist is out. Thanks all.

If you have the room to store it vertically the dolly I built is one 12' 2x4 & one 8' 2x4, four casters, and some padding (carpet remnants work perfectly). I've stored my LJ top this way for 5+ years and added my daughter's to the mix last year. Each dolly only needs 15 sq ft of space for storing your top.

Hi. any chance you can share pictures of your cart you built or dimensions.

Welcome to the forum! and thanks for bumping this thread....good info in there. Follow the links given above and there's a good description given to build it.

PS: where in Illinois are you?

Does anyone know if the directions that VirtualRussel posted will work with an LJ hardtop? Thanks in advance, it's much appreciated.

@VirtualRussel, great directions, thank you very much for taking the time to write this up. How's it holding up over the long run? You just saved me a ton of money, Thanks again!!

Looks like you should be good.

Well, that's what I get for posting late at night while I'm half asleep. Thank you for reiterating that for me, that's a blatantly obvious one, had I read closer. I'm going to go today to spend the few bucks and get the materials in the directions. And to think that I almost spent about $250 on a stand......

BTW, I'm a "Troll" who also relocated to the PNW, but I'm on the dry side.

IDK what kind of space you're working with OP or @Paragrunt but I threw a solid thick piece of plywood on top of some spare wood blocks leftover from building a fence. Set the hardtop on that in a nice cool shady corner and it seems to be doing just fine

Thanks, that's not a bad idea at all. I thought about simply building a cheap base to set it on, and keep under our (elevated) deck. But it's open on 3 sides, and we're on the Western Plains of Eastern Washington, so I'd have to screw it into the wood and weight it down. The wind out here can be downright viscous.

I went and picked up the wood, and got it cut up today. I just need some 1/2" screws per the directions, and I'll have it together tomorrow. I've only got a two car garage and it's a small one at that. But I've got enough room to stick it in the corner of the garage while still fitting my wife's car in there.

On a side note, any suggestions on how to bring the color back to my dark grey hardtop? It's all chalky as of now, I got it this way back in January. Figured I'd clean it up before I put it away.

I found these threads helpful when I was researching it.

Maybe it is because this is an old post, but I don't see the instructions. Any chance you can repost or direct me to another link?

No 'instructions', but this is what I built for our top...
It works GREAT, for FAR LESS than any of the commercially available options.

I'm not following. I did a hoist (you can find in a recent thread) BECAUSE my garage space is limited.
