Missouri SMORR Trip - Apr 23, 2022

When I got home yesterday, I quickly unloaded the trailer and truck and then spent most of the rest of the day with the wife so I haven't had a chance to wash or inspect my jeep yet.

My first trip to SMORR and my overall impression of SMORR is a great one. The facilities are nice, the campground is nice, the parking lot and campground roads are all gravel and plenty wide enough for truck/trailer, and you can wheel from 7am to midnight. They have security on staff and quiet hours (12am-7am) were actually quiet. They have a cafe on-site, but we never utilized it, so I can't comment.
They have a 6 level trail system
Level 1 being access roads, Level 6 being the hardest

We arrived Friday evening around 8pm and quickly got camp set up, our original intent was not to wheel friday night and thus I left my top and doors on the jeep (I should have known better). We eventually ran into AMS417 and his wife and chatted for a while over a few beers. Decision was made to run out Ranch Road to look at a few "buggy" obstacles and get a "feel for the park".
Me-TJ on 35's
Drew - Freakish 80's themed Samurai on 37's
Mason - TJ on 35's
AMS417 - LJ on 37's

We ran out Ranch Road, listening to the exhaust and supercharger on AMS417 rig, which sounds really good! Drew immediately put his tires on the waterfall on copperhead but after a few attempts, decided to back off. We headed over to Double Wammy (lvl 5). Drew started up and then I decided to not let him go alone. The bottom of Double Wammy is not easy and is pretty sketch in the dark, the middle is pretty technical with picking lines through rocks and steps, at the top there is a big step and Drew put the Sami on it's side but it was a real slow flop and no big issue. We had it flipped back over pretty quick and then decided to run up the bypass, which was muddy and rutted and ended up pulling cable to get out. At the top, on an easy access trail I hit a tree with my top and put a hole in the window.

Sat-
Started out with:
Me-TJ on 35's
Drew - Freakish 80's themed Samurai on 37's
Mason - TJ on 35's
MrHolland - LJ on 35's
White TJ on 35's (can't remember there name)
JKUR on 35's (can't remember his name)

We decided to go run a few trails to give AMS417 and his wife time to get breakfast and get ready.
* - indicates access road, number indicates Lvl
We started at approx 8:30am and ran the following:
*ranch road
-Wildflower (not on map) 4
-Hawkey 3
-Black Mamba 3
-Twister 3
-Pee Wee 3
-Bronco Buster 4 (I attempted to climb the step onto V notch but was unsuccessful)

We met up with AMS417 at the top of Bronco Buster and decided to head over to Guard Rail, but when we go there, there was a big traffic jam so we headed back out *Ranch Road to check out the Waterfall on Rattler.

*Ranch road
-Bottom of Rocker Knocker 4
-Rattler 5 the waterfall at the start of Rattler is pretty sketch and I made it but I put a scratch with a small dent in the drivers side rear fender.
-Moonshine 5 (the JKUR broke the front drivers side axle shaft at the bottom of Moonshine)
*Backwood road to *Ranch Road to camp

(Lunch)
After Lunch the JKUR decided to not go back out with us and MrHolland (LJ on 35's) and the JKUR went back to the cabin. The white TJ on 35s stuck with us.

*Ranch Road
-Larry's Hill 5(left line)
*Ranch Road
-Rocky Road 5 (this was probably my favorite trail, but it was short)
-Drew and I did Rocky Road to the top, the rest of the group took Buck Rub 3
-Iron Horse 3 (down)
-Log Jam 4 (down)

At the bottom of Log Jam, the white TJ on 35s decided to call it a day and we decided to head to Guard Rail

*Ranch Road to Camp for resupply and then to Guard Rail
-Guard Rail 3 (my son, Christian, drove my jeep) this is where we ran into Homeboy and Homeboy's Homeboy (see AMS417 pictures above).
-The end of Guard Rail was a muddy mess so we turned around and run Guard Rail backwards.
-On the climb out of Guard Rail, Mason ran into some issues with his Jeep, we got him situated enough to get him back to camp.
*Ranch Road back to camp

(Dinner)

After Dinner we were down to Me, Drew, and AMS417 and we made the decision to go run V Notch (down) and PuppyLicker before it got dark.
*Ranch Road
-V notch 4 (in the daylight)
-Black Mamba 3
-Trigger 3
-PuppyLicker 5 (it is now dark) Puppy Licker was a challenge, but it was my favorite trail of the day. I think there was 3 or 4 big steps spaced out and then the top was some v ruts that really flexed out your suspension. I had to pull cable on one of the steps. We ran into Homeboy on this trail and he was looking for his buddy who was supposed to be broke down somewhere.

-Few shots of Fireball and a beer at the top of Puppylicker in celebration and then back to camp.

Decided to head back out to run Pee Wee. Only took AMS417 LJ and my TJ and Christian drove my TJ.
*Ranch Road (Christian Drove)
-Pee Wee's Crossing 3 (Christian Drove)

We exited the trail at 11:58pm, two minutes before the trails closed. Basically wheeled from 8:30am - midnight.

I didn't take any pictures and actually never pulled out my phone after the original morning run. During the morning, I was trying to use the Avenza Map on my phone and quickly abandoned it and went to the paper map. I personally would rather use a paper map and don't like the limited view on the phone screen, but others experience may vary.

The above is my best recollection of the day, it may have varied some. Big shout out to AMS417 and his wife for the hospitality and showing us around. If you get the opportunity to join him for a trail ride, definitely take it.

There was some discussions above about TJs with 32s and 33s at this park. I agree with AMS417 that a TJ on 32s and 33s can have fun at this park, the Ranch Road hill (even though it is a Level 1, would be a challenge to climb back out if it was wet but you can always take Pee Wee back to the top) and all the Level 3 and below trails would be doable (I highly recommend having a winch in case that Level 3 is now a Level 4). However, I would highlight that you would need to go with other similarly equipped rigs and/or people of similar mindset.

Excellent write up. We need to be more diligent on picture taking. I get a little better every trip.

Thanks for monitoring radio so we could meet up after I got up and moving Saturday. I am not a morning person, at all. My wife is though, she was up, showered, coffee and breakfast going when I finally got the dog to stop harassing me to get moving. Tucker is a hard core wiener dog, he loves to run trails and try to hang out the window and rip sticks off the trees to collect in the passenger floor. Having a shower in the camper has proved a very worthy investment. Even it is the size of a small phone booth at 36"x24" IIRC.

I really wanted to follow you guys up the back half of Rocky Road up the ledges but the wife was not with it. I have ran it before, its a fun section. Puppy Licker in the dark / wet proved a challenge. Short wheel base was a boon for you guys. That and my Jeep is fat. Could not get grip and several full sends later you gave me the "you're gonna break something". That was a great set of trails.

We really played our cards right with trail choice during a big Jeep event and saw virtually no traffic issues other than the badge trail that we aborted after seeing the line of Mall Crawler JKs waiting to enter. Now that you have seen the exit you know there was not a rig in that line up that was going to make the exit without winching. Another example of a level 3 that should be a 4 or 5. Like the big hill on Ranch Road that is a 1, lol yeah right.

You guys should have stuck around Sunday. Rain stopped and we had lots of 2-3 trails to run just for scenery with a couple hard obstacles along the way. We planned to wheel but found ourselves alone and do not like to wheel without any support. You never know what can happen out there. We loaded up late morning and headed back.

We will be back for sure for July 4th and probably in May for testing on the YJ. Its almost done.

Come back any time, and let us know of any Hot Springs or other weekend trips we can make it too. I would love to hit some new parks.
