Hey guys. I just got a discount from a friend that works at a tire shop and I wanna put bigger tires on but I don't have a lift yet. Would 33s fit and if not could I trim or remove anything. I'm sure the bigger tires would raise the height so maybe I wouldn't need a lift after they are on

I could be wrong, but stock tires will give you full articulation. If you go more than 2" over that, you will probably no longer have full articulation without rubbing. As such, I am sure people have put 33" on, but they don't go off road much afterwards. I have read that you basically need 4" of a combination of suspention and body lift to get full articulation with 33's. Don't try to get your jeep featured in the "The unfortunate TJ of the day thread"

What you save on the tires you'll spend on headaches.

If you're going bigger than 31" tires, get a lift.

2"-2.5" of lift for 33's

33’s will fit with about 2” of uptravel or in other words your fenders and tires will be into each other with virtually every bump. Don’t do it. You need an absolute minimum of like 3” of lift to make 33’s “work”. 4” is best.

I bought my LJ stock height with 32x11.5x15 on stock ravines with only a spacer.

This looked awesome but all it took was a speed bump to hit fenders. I went down a gravel road and it would hit 2 fenders.

Going down the highway with the wife dog and I and a dip in the road would cause both rear tires to hit fender.

All this being said when I get my second LJ down the road and plan to keep it stock I will definitely stick some 32’s on there and never leave pavement because it looked damn good.

This side shot shows you how close the tires are to the fenders on level ground, the slightest bit of articulation and it hit everywhere

As above, not a good idea. Can it be done, yes, should it, no!

It’s not just the lift you should be concerned of. Brakes, steering and gearing should all be considered. Brakes and steering are all wear parts. If this stuff has been poorly maintained, the larger tires will take an additional toll to these items in short order.

If it’s a great deal, buy them but don’t mount them, save up for a lift and address any maintenance issues.

These TJ aren’t getting any younger. 16 years is the youngest one, which at 10,000miles per year of driving it puts most TJ’s in the sweet spot for a lot of maintenance

Please understand, I understand how tempting it is and how many people probably do it. I did the what will fit web searches before with a Tacoma build. First time I loaded up the bed of my truck I had less than 1" clearance left. Not to be defeated, I know have longer spacers under the bed of my truck (in all fairness, it was not the stock bed, but a flatbed that already had spacers under it. It is a sad compromise - but a necessary one. The bed no longer follows the lines of the cab perfectly, but the truck works wonderfully.

In all fairness, what size lift do you want to install? You can get the 33’s at discount cost and then wait to install them till you have 3” minimum lift. 😊

I bought a Jeep that had 33s and no lift. I don't know how I even made it home on the 2 hour drive from Washington D C. Stick with 31s unless you lift it.

33s with no lift is doable but you’ll want to run different fenders such as MCEs or Metalcloaks to gain some additional clearance. I’m not stock height but close to it. I’ve got the H&R springs which netted around 1” of lift and a .75” spacer to reduce the rake with my front bumper and winch. With my MCEs I have no rubbing on the fenders and I’ve got enough articulation to be comfortable to play with the bigger lifted rigs. No bottoming out on highway bumps either with stock bumpstops. Biggest thing to note about staying low to no lift is you’ll want some skid plates to protect the low hanging goods.

Alright. Well with the discount on tires I found a relatively cost effective 3"lift that won't hurt my bank account too much.

I found some 3 inch coil spacers for under $100 on a website called "Supreme Suspension" the name sounds like they are very reputable so I'll mail them a money order and have them within a couple weeks hopefully.

Money order? What are you going to do about shocks, gearing, driveline, recentering your axles, and extending your sway bar endlinks? $100 money order is not going to cover all that.

Edit: Any site or place that takes a money sounds as shady as they come whether it’s your preference or theirs. A credit card would protect both of you.
