Is there any value in a NSG370 6-speed?

I was about to offer "For Free" or recyce the 6 speed manual transmission out of my 05 4.0. it has an issue with reverse - it's tricky to get into reverse. a mechanic friend indicates that I have something of value here. I don't know much about Jeeps - this was my daughter's, and I get stuck fixing it, inlcuding replacing the aforementioned tranny.
Should I try selling it? if so, any ideas on the value? thanks

If your planning on getting rid of it for "free" than anything above "free" is its value. you could list for 100.00 bucks and pick up only or just give it away. If your looking for 500.00 bucks or a 1000.00 you wont get that.

If you are replacing it, you’ll likely have to turn in the old one or get charged extra money. It’s called a core charge. Most places that rebuild components want your old one back so it can be rebuilt and sold to the next customer.

It is ….

But the op said he was thinking of selling it not using it as a core exchange for a rebuilt transmission
That may be but I wonder if the OP has gotten far enough into it to know that yet.

Other than a used replacement (which I wouldn't expect to be any better than what came out), I did not come across any rebuilds that didn't take a core. High Impact paid $500.

If I were in his shoes I wouldn't waste a cent on a nsg370..I would go ax15 and not look back. I have spent lots of money on keeping an nsg370 and instantly regretted it..just my .02

I'm also in MD, I'd be interested in taking it off your hands.

I personally replaced my NSG370 with a rebuilt unit. As long as you don't drive it like sports car, run Redline fluids, it shouldn't have an issues.

that's what I'm doing. So I'll have an NSG370 laying around. I haven't decided whether to sell it as-is for nearly nothing, or spend the money to rebuild it. I'd probably net the same either way so if I rebuild it, it would just be for the experience.

I think I went with the Royal Purple variant...

I have the NSG370 and it has the 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 grind unless you baby it. I just switched to MTL and have noticed a difference. It didn't fix the problem just helped cold shifting and it is not as loud as it was before.

If redline made any difference for mine, it was indiscernible to me, despite my heightened attention to it hoping it would improve things. Still doesn't like reverse. Still notchy. Still noisy. Still loose (like I can feel so much lash being taken up as I let out the clutch that it wouldn't surprise me if one day the gears just got so far apart that they let the teeth slip right past each other).

How many miles are on your transmissions?

I can tell you the previous owner didn't know how to drive, or didn't understand the basic principles of a truck transmission. My NSG370 only had 55k miles on it before the reverse gear was shot, 1st gear was incredibly hard to get into, etc. (that's how I bought it). I replaced the entire thing with a rebuilt unit and I am very particular on how I drive now. I won't even let my wife drive the Jeep because of it. Regardless, a lot of people abused the shit out of these things and that's why people think they suck.

Check with Zumbrota drivetrain to see if they would buy the core. They sell remanufactured transmissions with a refundable core charge. You might not get the whole core price without buying a reman, but they may offer more than zero. They are currently asking a $1,500 core charge, indicating they may be in short supply.

I just replaced my NSG370 with a rebuilt unit from High Impact. My old transmission was worth exactly $500 as a core with no charge for return shipping. The new transmission works perfectly, shifts smooth. no issues whatsoever and cost $2K after core return. Maybe problems will occur over time but I chose to take that chance. The old one with defective parts was perfectly useable for about 110K miles. I'm 67. I doubt I'll need to replace the new one again during my tenure as owner assuming I keep water out of it and do routine maintenance. I like the ratios.

The reverse issue was a design defect that was addressed with redesigned parts that go into all rebuilt units. The transmission doesn't need to be be babied. It just needs to be driven like any manual transmission vehicle should be driven. It's unfortunate that so few people have experience driving stick shift vehicles and most are pretty bad at it. I've been driving manual transmission vehicles for 50+ years, starting with my first self-built vehicle, a '57 Chevy with an original 3 speed.

I wonder how many people have a Jeep as their very first manual transmission. I would guess it's a high proportion. Most manual transmission vehicles suffer at the hands of noob stick shift operators.

Have you done any deep water crossings? The vent on the NSG370 is on the shift tower. If you cross deep water without extending the vent, you'll get water in the transmission. I also wonder how many of these transmission turn shitty after getting water in them. I suspect that could have been the case with mine, before I bought it with 80K miles on it.
