If my 97 4.0 6cyl went out and I had to replace it, where should I start my search and what should I buy, like new / used ?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Should I have them replaced ?If its just tapping (not knocking) it's probably just something simple like the rockers, pushrods and lifters are just worn out.
I did the work my self, but since I was pulling the head to replace the lifters I opted to also replace the water pump, thermostat, and timing sprockets and chain while I had everything torn apart. I'm at 200k and it runs really well. If you do pull the head, inspect the cylinders. If you pay a shop it's going to be $$Should I have them replaced ?
I’ve never done that before. Not sure I have the experience needed for that challengeI did the work my self, but since I was pulling the head to replace the lifters I opted to also replace the water pump, thermostat, and timing sprockets and chain while I had everything torn apart. Well y’all hit the nail on the head. It’s tapping pretty good upon startup. But It quiets down as I drive.Oh ya, I just re-read your post @Eddie Greenlee - you're saying "if". I wouldnt worry about it. If its not blowing clouds of smoke, burning quarts of oil and misfiring uncontrollably, I wouldn't worry much about it. Cross that bridge when you get to it. If you daily your TJ but got a little money put aside, don't touch it in case and keep on moving.
lifter tick. the oil just needs to fill the lifter back up and it quiets down.Well y’all hit the nail on the head. It’s tapping pretty good upon startup. But It quiets down as I drive.
