Feels like running out of gas; smells like gas and/or exhaust; generates back flow (backfire) and then, loses power and dies. Not throwing any codes.

Replaced (but no improvement):
- Manifold / head gasket
- fuel pump (and checked harness)
- throttle body kit (BBK)
- Replaced sensors (all Mopar)
- TPS (throttle position sensor)
- MAP (manifold absolute pressure)
- IAC (idle air control)
- CPS (cam position sensor)

Had my 'Jeep guy' take a look and he's stumped too.

Took it to the Jeep dealership and asked them to work through the following:
- O2 sensor (checked out ok)
- Catalytic converter (checked out ok)
- Coil and/or plugs
- PCM (power train control module)
- ECU (engine control module)
- camshaft
- OPDA
- Fuel injectors

They've told me that it's related to a needed transmission rebuild (32RH)
- Discovered trans fluid aeriated and burnt clutch material
- Est $6,000

I agree trans needs rebuilt (project #2) but can't understand how that might solve the original problem above.
What am I missing? Thx!

I would take another look at the catalytic converter’s and I wouldn’t be rebuilding the transmission until I was totally sure

Struggling to come up with a transmission failure mode that would drag on an engine in Park/Neutral and that they want $6k to fix it... Reminds me of the scene in National Lampoons Vacation when Clark paid $500 (in 1983 dollars) for four bald tires and a tow.

Bahahaha! Agreed. Will be taking to a trans specialist but in my mind that's a separate issue. Like you, I can't think of a transmission failure that would create the symptoms described above.

It sounds like you’ve got a fuel pick up issue- The next time it does it you need to loosen the gas cap and see if there’s an excessive amount of vacuum pull on the system
