TJ towing a boat

Back in the early 80’s me and my Brother would watch one of our neighbors pull wheel stands in his CJ5 pulling his ski boat out of his driveway (90 deg turn going uphill) and would laugh our asses off. That is when I decided that if I ever bought anything that needed to be towed, I’d do it with 3/4 ton or bigger truck/van. I have not regretted my decision yet. Sometimes I hook up the car trailer to the jeep just to move it or park it and even that sucks.

Can a 2003 TJ 4.0 tow a 2500 lb boat? My buddy wants to get a Jeep and he has a boat that he needs to be towed. Any experiences or advice you can share would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
I have a TJ, a wakeboard boat (3500#) and a Silverado. I've used the Jeep to squeeze the boat into tighter areas around my house. Makes parking it way easer in tight spots but anything more than a block or two the full size takes it. As stated it gets super sketchy really fast. Have a buddy with a 4door JK that pulls his no problem. Issue 2 is weight... I'm in Colorado, not a chance in Hell that 4.0 is pulling anything uphill

I bet this Capitalist could tow a boat with a TJ.

my TJ had these on it when I bought it from the local marina back when I lived near Lk. Hopatcong in NJ

but they say they only used it for moving boats around the storage lot and ramp...the way the front springs are sagged, they must have done a lot with that front mount

NEVER EXCEED THE TOWING CAPACITY RATING OF A VEHICLE. And, when you Tow, GO SLOW !!!!!!! If you are towing on hills, go REALLY SLOW. Towing requires extreme safety. An improperly set tongue weight on a trailer, or a bad hitch, or an emergency stop, even with proper Towing Capacity, can be fatal. Then, the distance between you and the cars in front of you, keep way more distance to stop, you are stopping much more weight. CJs, YJs, and TJs, are made for Off Road Fun, not for Towing, believe me, maybe you can haul a bike or a lawn mowing tractor or a light small lake boat, but thats it, anything else is a big NO.

I have towed approximately 1500lbs with mine (trailer and atv) when it was stock. It wasn't the most enjoyable experience. I now use a 1/2 ton Yukon XL or a 3/4 ton truck depending what I'm getting into (or what season - no truck in winter).

I would never do this or suggest anyone ever try it. There is a guy at the marina I go to in Havasu that launch's and retrieves a large (24-26') boat w/ a stock TJ, the first time I saw him pull it out I sat and waited w/ my power wagon, winch controller in hand, assuming he was going for a swim, he made it, I couldn't believe it. I've seen it several times since. I'll try to get a pic or vid this summer for you guys. Again, I would never do this or suggest anyone ever try it.

Interesting discussion. There's a Tahoe 16 that I'd like to pull with my 2000 Wrangler Sahara but I think the weight for the boat and trailer is at 1,950 lbs. The manufacturer of the Tahoe 16 shows the "average package weight" at 2,200. That's just over the tow capacity of 2,000 lbs. From the comments here, I don't think it's a good idea. :-(

Not a good idea at all unless you’re just towing it across your property or something.
