What's a good sounding exhaust for the TJ?

I'm not sure there is one. The 4.0 sounds like garbage with any sort of exhaust modification. I've owned a lot of good sounding cars over the years and the 4.0 isn't anywhere on that list. It really sounds like crap IMHO.

If you want some more sound, just remove the third cat and you'll gain more sound than you probably want.

Make your own! 🤣

What's a good sounding <$350 TJ Jeep exhaust for sale? Plz include link.
I removed the third cat since it has no sensor and doesn’t throw a code and my local shop replaced the stock muffler with a magnaflow and it’s nice. It’s not loud, but sounds better than stock and definitely more airflow. It was around $150 I think

I'll consider, thanks for the help!

Not sure if the PO of mine installed a different exhaust or altered it in any way other than chopping it off 3" after the muffler but it sounds amazing.

I just want a little more sound and rumble for how much it burns gas lol.
in my ears opinion, this style muffler is your best bet

Suggesting a muffler is just as difficult as suggesting shocks, like how the fuck do you justify this or that with words over internet. I know we have a few threads going on this subject, search 40 series mufflers, im sure they will come up. Further more, search for a video of specific muffler and in all videos the same muffler will sound different.

I currently have roughly the type i linked you, it came with Jeep and has no markings on it, so i dont know who is the maker or model. Overall, it is almost a straight pipe.

This muffler sounds rawrrr and mean, but it is also obnoxious, long road trips with it will test your endurance.
Reason why i like it over everything else i have heard so far, is because it is consistent from idle and above. In the morning, everyone in the apartment complex knows that i am warming my Jeep up. Idling at the red light, i and everyone else hears it. Taking off and going through the gears, everyone knows that i am driving a manual.

With other mufflers it is roughly what Chris said, they change sound but not in a good way, in my opinion they do a better job at highlighting how much it sucks instead of giving you any meaningful rumble. Nissan Z models, have you heard their exhaust? From factory to aftermarket, they all sound pathetic, and it is a very distinct pathetic sound, i can always tell when there is Z driving in my vicinity. Kind of the same thing going on with our 4.0s and majority of aftermarket mufflers.

My hearing is bad enough after many years of working around loud machinery in the USN.
I don't need to make it any worse with a droning exhaust system; so I would prefer to stay with as close to factory stock as possible.
If your hearing is that bad, you wouldn't be able to tell any difference anyway.

I’ve pretty much had all the bolt on cat backs besides banks and magnaflow. MBRP has been the best fitting and lasted the longest. It’s not too loud and sounds decent.

Listen to what others are saying. Keep the exhaust close to a stock sound. My favorite exhaust, out of several tried, is the Walker 21456 Quiet Flow muffler. It mates nicely with the 54227 tailpipe. I'm using a Walker 2 1/2" lap joint clamp (33976) to connect the primary converter to the secondary converter, and a Walker 2 1/4" lap joint clamp (33975) to connect the muffler to the tailpipe. The clamps allow the exhaust to be tweaked (i.e. moved in and out, and twisted) to fit whatever setup you have. They also make it incredibly easy to disassemble the exhaust later, should you need to work on something that requires removing it.

I can't find a good picture of the Walker 33975 clamp from the muffler to the tailpipe, but it looks just like this.
