Buying Advice

Wow! Reading this thread makes think I was really lucky. Purchased mine 9/20 for 12k pretty much as you see it in my avatar. One owner, 65k about 2 miles from my house. Custom paint inside and out all mods were done by a local Jeep shop with a stellar rep. They had the paperwork for everything. It needed a new top and a CC. I purchased a MF hi-flow cat and installed it myself. I bought a new PE top off CL for $175.

It was posted at 1am. I called immediately and got the vin and ran the CF. He was about to go to bed so I called at 8am and he had been getting emails since he posted it. He had four people already lined up to look at it that afternoon at a local strip mall. I told him to meet me at my bank and(about a mile for each of us) and if it checked out I would get him the cash. It did and I did.

32RH/4.0 Sport. He was an exec for one of the auto paint companies so the paint is a custom 3 stage one off with a pearl base.

I turned down 18k for it at Home Depot yesterday.

It will look a bit different by next week. Metalcloak rear bumper and flat flares on the way. It had a SB rear tire carrier bumper that I sold already. The front is a Body Armor 4x4 that I’m still debating on whether to keep or not. Don’t need a winch for the mild OR I do. I think I would like something a bit slimmer. Haven’t really seen anything yet. Don’t want a stubby. I think I might just remove the bolt on winch protector first and see how that works. I also got BT sliding uppers for Xmas which I love.

I had a similar situation when I bought my 03' Rubicon. One owner from Texas, retired military and recently moved to Washington D C. He listed it 11pm on a Saturday night. I emailed him about coming to check it out Sunday morning. I got there at 8am ( 2 hour drive) and 3 people had already beat me to it. I called him right before I got there and told him I brought cash and I would buy it if it looked as good as the pictures. Some guy was trying to write him a check (when I pulled up) for a deposit to hold it until Monday when the banks opened. I drove it and handed him $9500 cash and drove it back home. The guy had every service record from the day he bought it. Window sticker too.

I have a similar story of how I acquired mine. No need to repeat. Line of people. Guy was a banker. All transactions at his bank.

I’m afraid that this is your problem.

A Jeep with zero rust, a Jeep from down south with a clean car fax, or a Jeep from out West that’s been well taken care of is going to be near impossible to find for a “good deal” based on how drastic the market has changed in the last 1-2 years for used TJ’s and Unlimited's.

I’d say a rust free, average milage (90-120k) with a clean carfax is around $16k-24k easily.

Make it Rubicon or an Unlimted and the markwt seems to be leaning towards the $22k-24k easily.
I have a 1999 TJ Sport manual (AT was a 3 speed) with 48k miles. Original owner. Always garage kept and no rust. Mobil One every year even though it was maybe 2k miles some years. 35s, ARBs, 4.88s. What do you think it's worth?

I knew you would understand the color thing. 👍 🥳
p.s. I think we're #2 on mrblaines "worst colors" ever list. It would be racist of me with my CRT training to tell you what color is #1. Some guy on here with yellow decals knows. I think his brother owns Cooper tires.
I hate black. How’s that for being PC?! It just shows everything.

The only one I’ve seen that looks good is @AndyG.

I don’t care though. Color is a personal preference.

I also like Intense Blue Pearl, Stone White, Impact Orange, Solar Yellow, Silver, and a clean Patriot Blue.

Guess I should paint mine then.

Yours looks good too. My memory just fails me. 😉 Sorry about that bud.

BTW, I love the silver accents on your black Jeep! I think you made the only right call on that one. It dresses up black with a perfect contrast.

Pics would help. I would start it at about 18k and take no less than 12k.

Even I’m not a fan of owning black - it works you to death - @Hog has it down to a science - it either looks great or terrible usually-and can all happen the same day

Tough to nail down, if it was all stock, rust free, it would be worth $22k+ Compared to what I’ve watched at auction over the last few months.

Insanely good deal- good on you for having cash and making it happen.

I find myself really wanting to get back into a Jeep. I've been on the hunt for a few months now and have seen a few that caught my eye, but for some reason I haven't been able to seal the deal. I have the money ready to go and am willing to hop on a plane to pretty much anywhere. I haven't had to try and spend money this hard ever. Is there a secret to getting a response from people on Craigslist? Every ad I've inquired about I never getting anything back. Am I doing this wrong? I've been looking locally but it's either a beatup shit box or a ridiculously high price. Sorry, I'm not dropping 25K on a Jeep with 150k miles.

Any tips on actually getting people to respond?
Try Gilbert Jeeps, Athen, Al. Tell them Andy sent you. They only sell nice stuff.

Ha.. I’m not either but ive had 5 vehicles over the last 15 years that are black… it looks menacing I guess… best color when it’s clean… worst when it’s dirty… 🤷‍♂️
