Tailgate torx head extractions

Get some sacrificial torx sockets, heat them to glowing, and insert into the bolts... allow heat to transfer, then try to turn with another, unheated socket.

Best advice I ever got here was from Blaine on these screws.

just drill the heads off. You can then back the screws out with your finger tips. No joke. It will take you 15 minutes total.

Buy new screws and paint them.

this really is the best way

I broke a bunch of high quality torx bits and wanted to break stuff.
if you get them hot enough to do anything the paint will be toast and you will probably mar the paint on you hinges or tailgate.

I know you don’t want to hear this…

I’d say it depends on how old the Jeep is and how much corrosion it has in general. My tailgate hinges (‘06) came off without stripping any of the screws.

I used a quality heat gun, and applied what I guessed would be enough heat. It didn’t affect the paint at all. Then used one hand to firmly press the head of the ratchet into the screw with a ~12” length of steel pipe as a cheater bar on the ratchet handle.

This method also worked fine for 6 more screws on a pair of ‘97 half doors.
