To those chastising him because of a safety concern think that through. If you hit your head on the bar hard enough to leave more than a painful bump what injury do you think that thin pad will actually prevent? Think slowly if you need to.
irregardless of perceived effectiveness the pad is not "thin" on the 03-06

Good lord, I am so glad I came along before car seats, bicycle helmets and required seat belts.
It's a wonder I didn't get my eyes shot out with a BB gun, blow my hand off with a M80(the real ones), drown because I would be gone on the lake all day by myself or lose a limb working on farm equipment.

Or ride in the back of a pickup, or sitting on the tailgate, or…

It certainly does make a difference, up to a point. That is why it is there in the first place.

And I don’t need to think slowly. I understand physics. It significantly distributes the impact force.
