Alternate recovery options?

The inter-cooler is fine there. What's going to happen if it gets knocked by a few rocks? Nothing or, "ooh, I lost some boost, hisss" Buy another inter-cooler when you get your next paycheck and problem solved.

One of these integrated grill/bumper angry choo-choo train things would cover the aftercooler...

But they're hideous of course. I like how your jeep looks and would love a turbo 2.4 for a mostly-street jeep. If you're sticking with the tube bumper I'd screen in the hoop for protection.

You haven't mentioned what kind of wheeling you do. People do tons of wheeling without a winch. Tow straps, shovel and jack go a long way. Working hard to recover from a bad decision or two will have you making better decisions real quick

Do you carry a spare radiator?
I do not. Mainly because I don't have it sitting on my front bumper out in a spot where it will be the first thing that stops rocks and what not from impacting the grill. The grill on the other hand, does a fairly good job of protecting my radiator from at least half the crap that would impact it since there are slats on either side of the slots. If my radiator was out front, yes, I'd carry a spare and some coolant.

True words. Learnt that one the hard way. Buddy with a severe case of testosterone got high centered about 20 feet from a tree. Worked us like dogs using his hi-lift, stacking rocks, digging for an hour trying to get him unstuck rather than use his winch that easily had more than the 20 feet of line needed to get to the tree in front of him. Lesson of the day? Don't wheel with folks who would rather work you to death rather than use their winch.
