First oil change on my new TJ (bad news?)

Hahaha — That thought has crossed my mind!! On top of this I've been chasing several evap leaks, a faulty cruise control, steering play, bad heater core, annnnnd some loud metal noise, possibly wheel bearings. It's like peeling back a very very bad onion.
It's a Jeep thing!

Noticed I had a cracked plastic piece on the back of the valve cover last night and when I tried to remove it, being so old and brittle it crumbled on me. Ordered a new one but wanted to ask if it normal smokes this much from there. I just cranked it in my backyard and let it idle for about 10 mins.

I also noticed lots of coolant on the bottom of the radiator. That looks like a leak to me… Am I correct? There is lots of rust looking gunk floating around in the radiator as well.

I've done a few cylinder head swaps, and I still wouldn't condemn the head until you see the crack, or can confirm through testing that there is coolant in the oil/oil in the coolant or combustion gases in the coolant. The oil looks like it has moisture in it, but it's not the worst I've seen, usually it looks like chocolate milk.

The overheating is likely all the brown junk and rust in your coolant plugging the radiator. Mine was like this when I bought it, and I had to do several flushes before it started to resemble coolant again.

Did the “at home combustion leak detection” kit from Auto Zone and it looks like there are no exhaust gasses coming back into the radiator. So far so good. Still getting a compression test done later this week after I fix the clogged up CCV/PCV breathers that I discovered last night.

Make sure the elbow with a correctly sized orifice goes back in the right spot. The rear elbow has a much smaller hole than the front one

glad you didn’t start tearing the engine apart. You still may have a problem somewhere besides what you found but atleast you properly diagnosed it. The exhaust test you did is usually pretty obvious when the head gasket is bad because it blows coolant out of the thing when it warms up. This is why I was more concerned about how your oil looked after driving it a few miles. We can speculate all day long but the dirty work needs to be done to figure out what the root problem is.

Update… I noticed a drastic coolant loss after swapping out the 180F thermostat the PO had with a Mopar 195F. I put dye in the coolant and low behold found my leak… Removing the head to inspect the cylinder head itself as well as the gasket. Hoping the damage isn’t too bad. It’s been running decent but only losing coolant.

What is a good way to check the rest of
The engine components while the head is off?

Compression test, leakdown test and check oil pressure with mechanical gauge to check engine health. All done assembled though

Working on this when I get time and here lately I haven’t had much of that. I made some more progress on the breakdown of the engine. My wife and two-year old daughter had fun Sunday evening watching me remove a good chunk of parts from the Jeep.

This weekend I removed the rusty driver side fender in hopes it would make the intake removal job easier — it did. I was already going to remove it to replace it with a new fender I’ve painted.

I should have the head off this week.

nice wheel chocks !!!

Thank you haha! My dad gave them to way back when and they’ve been put to good use since I bought the Jeep.

those are aircraft chocks ! they work great and last forever .....I've seen a 757 at takeoff power jump them, luckily the guy running it was quick off the throttle and got her stopped before going to clean his drawers !!!!

Exhaust manifold, alternator, head cylinder bolts, lifters, and rods are out.

Question: what is this bolted to the cylinder head? I noticed while cleaning it’s missing a wire and the other has copper showing. Is this a temp sending unit? Looks like it’s attached the the alternator/cps harness.

That is the most inexpensive labor charge for an engine replacement I've ever seen. Is it that easy to R&R the TJ engine??

Based off only a few years later having to repair a bad head gasket I'd say cheaper isn't always better. I'm finding most of the gaskets used were cheap — will be going with Fel-Pro when I seal this engine back up.

It's the ignition capacitor.

So... with the connector missing a wire what would that do? I'm going to open the connector up and reset the connections so all is as it should be.

Awesome!! Thanks guys!! Head goes to a machine shop this week if they find a crack I’ll be ordering a new one from Clearwater then hopefully getting her back on the road by mid-late November as my schedule allows. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of the Jeep.
