Interestingly Google doesn't turn up much on this topic.

I plan to rarely transport diesel via fuel can, so I don't want to buy/store dedicated cans if I don't need to.

So is a little residue back and forth okay? Will small engines be fine with that too?

Personally, I wouldn't do it, but that's because I know that, at some point, someone in our household would leave diesel in that gas can (me, because I'm the only one who handles diesel), and either forget about it (me), or not know about it (her), and put diesel in the lawnmower (more likely her because she wouldn't be as in-tune to the differences, but if I'm in a hurry or daydreaming, I could do it, too). To me, it's cheap insurance to have true yellow diesel cans for the tractor.

Edited to add: I know you just asked about residue, but I commented on this because I've made this mistake (forgetting what's in a container and assuming incorrectly the next time it was dispensed) with other chemicals before. I wasn't implying that you're as absent-minded as I am, so no offense was intended.

With hearing how expensive it is when someone puts gas in one of these new diesel engines, I'd probably stick to color coded fuel cans if possible.

Other than my diesel heater I doubt I'll ever need a can for my truck.

I guess I’m not understanding the question. I thought we were talking about residue?

Don't bother, just grab a few hefty bags.

That's why I edited my post. Toximus is from my home state, and where he lives, I'd trust that he's a solid, practical, self-reliant feller, as you have to be to live in those parts. After my original post, I realized he might not want the answer to a question he didn't ask, but I left my post there for others to consider. I search this forum for information all the time, and the answers to the un-asked questions are sometimes gems to me that I didn't think about. Although the OP in those threads didn't ask the questions that were answered, I'm grateful for the additional comments. Since this forum's purpose seems to be to trade information and share knowledge, why be so strict and require only the questions at hand to be answered? Is there no value in entertaining other comments?

This would be my concern - I could see myself getting in a rush and not really thinking. But to the original question, small residue shouldn't matter.

You're right residue shouldn't be an issue.

I answered the way I did because I know Tox has a new diesel on order.

If it's a last resort thing then sure no problem using what you have but I wouldn't run my diesel low enough that a fuel can was needed.

I should probably clarify.

By residue I mean the small drippings that are difficult to pour out of the can.

I do not expect to store diesel longer than it takes to drive back from the gas station. (I'll be using it immediately).

The diesel will be used mainly in a generator, diesel heater, and I'd love some sort of heavy machinery some day for yard work.

Gasoline I do expect to store for a few months at a time.

Gasoline will be used in Jeeps, ATV, and lawn equipment.

I wasn't trying to correct you or anything, that was a side thought :)

Definitely agreed if I had a diesel I wouldn't risk that low either barring exceptional circumstances.
