Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

It's 69⁰ inside the garage right now.

Got the backing plates made for the corner armor. Then stealing an idea from @starkey480 I made some standoff sliders for the rear of the tub. My router skills are not on par with his. I slipped and buggered a corner so extended the 45⁰ angle down the sides a little bit.

And I made a mess while I was at it.

Here's the ends of the pieces.

And the front. I've only got one end of these done until I get the front fenders mounted so I can see how much I'll need to cut off.

Went back and looked at Starkey's thread and see where I messed up. Now I need to see if my neighbor has a 1/4" round over bit since it was his router I'd borrowed. Should help to make it look a little better. But I dorked it up so it will be what it will be. I'm the first to admit when I screw up.

a router might be the ticket.
if i'm working freehand i'll take and clamp the pieces together or set them side by side or back to back and work as many surfaces as i can as a single piece so all the angled surfaces are equal. sculpting by hand takes an artists eye, i don't have either so i try to do my best.

I'd remembered incorrectly what he's done on his and instead of going back and rereading his posts I just tried to use a 45* router bit and slipped with it on one side. It was my first time ever using a router which again was probably a mistake. And once I'd messed the one long edge up I tried to make all the others match and it just got worse from there. Then I decided to round the edges.

I'll try to clamp them down side x side so that I can just run the router up between them and cut two sides at a time. That is a good tip. I appreciate the help.

Owning a screw up is how you learn. It’s once you stop screwing up that you should be worried!

Nothing some more routing can’t fix… or a tree/rock on the trail

I screw up every day and try to learn from them. Some seem to forget this.

The Diablo 1/4” round over bit in the router should fix up the edges. Do you have a miter saw? I mitered the ends of mine.

Thanks, I hope it does. I'd gotten the 45* angle stuck in my head for some reason so tried to use a 45* route bit. No, I don't have a miter saw but my neighbor might. All I have is a chop saw.

So for future when you screw up the first one STOP. Then ask. Then fix what happened on the first before going to the second. Then you can try to fix the first or throw it away and start over.

When I made my lower aluminum valencejust recently I had it all made nice and needed to route the lips that cover the armor and I went and routed the opposite side of the first side but stopped before totally ruining it..I had to shorten it up to salvage it. We all screw up but you got to fix it! Don't post it as is like that's the quality you're happy with.

I think a 45deg would look fine also. You definitely have to clamp the work piece though. Then you could come back with a hard disc and just round over the changer edges *lightly*. I bet that would look great. The saying looks good is good comes to mind. Basically if it looks smooth and well finished it's gonna work well and be a good slider.

Minor things to add to this great advice: I ordered my AL lengths a little long so I would have some extra to practice on, though I haven't done them yet. Also a routing table makes it nearly impossible to mess it up if you have the right bit.

I have a shitty routing table from home Depot and it's not flat... So I actually had to clean up the table routing with a hand router lol
