“Thought it was done” build / blog

I am a mechanic. A 2” open end wrench does the job. Or a jack handle. Lol. I was more mad at how upset the POS had my wife than anything else.

My truck was at my wife’s work, busy tourist parking lot. Middle of the day. A customer parked near my wife and went in to get a few things. When he came out he noticed a gas smell and saw gas under the truck. He went back inside and notified my wife. They went back out and found a hole in the tank with a soda cup collecting fuel. The police and fire department came out. Cleaned up the mess and moved the truck. I arrived shortly after. We noticed a beat up shady looking car parked behind the truck. At this point nobody was around but me and my wife. Then I noticed somebody in the car. I finished picking up some fuel containers. My wife headed over and took photos of the car. I started over to talk to the guy and he started up the car and left. The police said he was wanted for some other things. The bastard sat in his car hiding the entire time until police and everyone had left. When he noticed our attention he decided to leave. 🤬
A soda cup? How much was he expecting to steal? 20 ozs?

Ran the Rubicon Saturday evening and returned home today. That was a lot of fun. We ran from Loon to Rubicon springs and back out to Loon. Will post some pics tomorrow.

There was 4 rigs in our group. Two of us left a bit earlier than the other two and took our time and enjoyed the ride up. We meet the other 2 around 630 at “ Beer tree” we made it to the top of Walker about dark time. We continued on and ran Little sluice in the dark. We made camp at Arnold rock, the crapper with a view. Got a fairly early start on Sunday morning and ran down Old Sluice through to Rubicon springs. Then reran the trail and made camp at the bottom of Little sluice. Was a very long day yesterday, 12 hrs from camp to camp with only a few stops. We ran back to loon today. At the top of the “bowl” we ran into a lone wheeler who tore both the passenger side front control arm mounts off his axle. One of the guys in our group had a trail welder. So we spent a few hours patching him up to get him to the trail head.

I had one little oops on my rear driver corner in Old Sluice. Other than that only armor hit rocks. My gas tank skid has now been thoroughly tested.
My steering box is toast. Has a lot of play and is leaking out of the top of the sector shaft cover. Was a great trip. No winching for me, had to stack some rocks at the bottom of Old sluice at the Rubicon Springs property boundary. There is a tough climb up through there especially early in the year before alot of traffic.
Learned a lot this weekend.

Got any pictures or a list of what all you packed in your Jeep for the trip? Like camping wise…
I went pretty light. Small tent, small inflatable bed roll, sleeping bag and pillow. The black box had a small 1 burner stove and utensils. Tools, impact and sockets. Recovery gear bag. Extra oils and fan belt, tire plug kit.

Perfect. I haven’t done any camping out of my Jeep but that is probably about all I would bring and y’all’s Jeeps don’t look overly stuffed. Looks like a great trip. I wish I had my Jeep when the Rubicon was only 8 hours away instead of 38.

The rack I just built made a huge difference in accessibility. My ice chest was way over kill.
