Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

For the thin backer plate on the rub rails, why not something wider, thicker (and aluminum) to add more strength and resist deforming the tub?

is there any common or standard for backers? is 3/16"x 2 enough or is 1/4" thick the minimum? is 3/8" better or overboard?

My thinking is to start with what Savvy does for their sliders and rub rails for inspiration.

Does the backer bar fill the entire space under the tub rail? If I end up having to make my own, I would make the backer pretty wide and bring it up as high as I could to support the tub from the inside. That would be quite a bit of meat in addition to the corner armor.

So measure the available space and buy the biggest available bar that will fit?

it does not, i'm tight up to the bend but have another 1/2". i'd think 2.25" would be max any more might have to be trimmed.

the bar i have appears to be drilled on the center line or close, a wider bar would require the holes to be off center.

Oh man, I just watched that whole video. Say what you want about ole' MJ, but the man had talent.
I remember watching MJ on television in 1969, Ed Sullivan show, and knew he was going to be big. My two favorite artists from the 80's were Michael Jackson and Prince. Both were definitely on the weird side, but the talent meter was pegged with them. The George Harrison "While my guitar gently weeps" tribute Prince did at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others, is still my all time favorite tribute. Unbelievable guitar skills and he didn't get the recognition he really deserved!

Tossing the guitar and walking off was a major boss move.

I did work with a guy who claimed to have used the urinal next to Prince at one of his earlier shows here.

I never got to see him but he’s definitely one of my favorite guitarists.
I got to take my mom for her birthday to see Prince when I was still at Clemson about 11 years ago. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. He was the best.

They say he used to go door to door with the jehovah witnesses but he never stopped at my house. I need to go see Paisley Park. We saw some of his stuff at the Super Bowl exhibits when the Super Bowl was here.

I’ve seen probably 500 concerts and that one remains in the top 5. He changed outfits prob 7-8 times. He would medley 2-3 of his hits together as a time so you got the hooks and chorus of all the popular stuff and the rest was a straight up rock and roll dance party. It was so much fun.

The backer plates I used are 0.375" x 1" Carbon Steel Rectangle Bar A36 Hot Rolled and I didn't see any need for it to be wider than this. Of course, I could be mistaken but I didn't even have backer plates with the Poison Spyder corners so this is an improvement over nothing.

I don't have a router table but my neighbor that I borrowed the router from thinks he has one but has to check. I can see how that would help a LOT as trying to freehand it was a failure on my part. It can get away from your really easy.

Since I'd already FUBAR the rails I decided to try freehand the edges. I should have gone back and read @starkey480 thread on how he'd done his BEFORE I started on mine but I trusted my old memory instead 😔. Yep it was a failure and I had no intention of leaving the rails like they were.

So the good news is that I was able to save the rails and not have to order more metal. I had to play with it a bit before I got the whole thing figured out.

Now I shouldn't get too much grief from the peanut gallery.

Once I get the front fenders on I'll cut the front rails down.

Overall I'm happy with how they turned out.

Might not be as nice since I have the ends I'd buggered up but it works.

Now to clean up the mess I'd made.
