Recently I had to take off the rear bumper extensions on my jeep so that I could install the smittybilt src roof rack. It brought a question to mind. What purpose do the bumper extensions actually serve, or were they meant to serve? If they were to actually protect the vehicle they would be made of metal. But they are made of plastic so they can easily be ripped off if you hit something from the side and if you were to hit something from the back the plastic would just get pushed into the rear tire and undercarriage. Plus the plastic fades over time so they just wind up looking super ugly. As an aside is their a company that makes metal bumper extensions?

one possible purpose is to be a sacrificial part to avoid damaging anything else in minor, low speed parking lot type events. A sharp edged steel bumper is likely to do a lot more paint damage if you accidentally tag somebody pulling into a parking space.

Another one is just to avoid having a sharp metal edge exposed to grab your leg when you walk by it. Most manufacturers tend to avoid that sort of thing.

Have you never parallel parked a car? At low speed, you want plastic that gives in case you accidentally love tap the other vehicle. Ideally there would be no scratching or damage applied to either vehicle. They are not meant to protect your Jeep from a boulder or Russian invasion. If you think you are going to win in a head on collision with metal end caps you would be wrong.

Milk Jugs .......:giggle:I'm waiting on @TheBoogieman to respond. Lol.

They DO serve a real purpose. They keep you from making eye contact for too long. That can get creepy. ;)
