Sold's 2006 LJ Build

The Toyota H4 kit is a good one, I'm running it. You can't find a better deal that comes with the wiring harness and bulbs.

I've got the Hella housings / bulbs and a upgraded H4 wiring harness.....if I went with the Toyota kit I would probably be able to return both the upgraded wiring harness and hella kit and save around.....$50. Wondering if it's worth the effort of returning everything. I should get good results with the setup I've already purchased but people seem to like the toyota setup better

Went with the toyota kit.....returned to sender the Ksuspension wiring harness and Hella Vision Plus housings... Found some information on a miata forum regarding the difference between the Hella Vision plus and the Hella E Code housings:

"The design of the e-code lamp housing is different from that of the vision plus. In the US, we have a requirement that headlights be able to light up overhead signs. In Europe, that's not the case. As a result, the e-codes direct almost all their light to the road, while the vision plus lamps are a bit more of a compromise. The sharp cutoff you see with the e-codes is a result of this difference.

It seems that it would very difficult to get "caught" with e-codes, particularly with an NA, since they're hidden when not in use and don't look brighter to oncoming traffic (assuming stock wattage bulbs)."

Posting this so that if anyone decides to go halogen over LED, just go ahead and skip the hella housings and order the toyota kit linked above.

The Toyota/ koito headlights are "E" codes as well technically. They don't say DOT on them but say E on them. It's not a real big issue though from what I have experienced. I swapped the Hella e codes for the toyota kit and like the toyota kit better. The harness is much nicer than the Amazon harnesses IMO.

To be honest I would switch to some kc LEDs or the holly lights if I could justify the cost as they look the most stock.

I've been running e-code lamps with phillips +130% bulbs for years. Its never been a problem and when you have them aimed properly, you won't blind oncoming drivers with glare (due to the super sharp cut-off of a quality lens).

I would like to go ahead and start my build thread for my 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited LJ. I introduced myself to the forum and posted some pictures of the Jeep, but I figured I would post them again for the "before" pictures and update as I go.

My plans as of right now are:

  • 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (LJ)
  • Metalcloak 3.5" long travel short arm suspension lift / Rocksport Shocks /aluminum upper double adjustable arms, steel lowers
  • 33x10.5x15 Goodyear Duratrac tires on the OE Ravine wheels
  • 5.13 Yukon gears + PowerTrax NoSlip Front and Eaton ELocker Rear - 4340 chromoly front axle shaft
  • ORO SwayLOC (ORO-SL-TJLV)
  • Koito Housings & Harness H4 Conversion Headlamps
  • ZJ Steering Conversion - Moog Tie Rod End (ES3096L) / Moog Tie Rod End Adjusting Sleeve (ES2079S), Moog Tie Rod (DS1312)
  • Noico sound dampening for inside / Full BedRug kit / Insulation for around transmission and firewall areas. I also plan to add it to the Hardtop.

Future :

Savvy Rock sliders and additional armor / I need some recovery gear .

Some of these items have already been purchased. These are my immediate plans but have some other thoughts in mind for where I would like to take this Jeep. Ill post pictures of installs and progress as I go, as well as future plans past these items. If anyone has suggestions or thoughts I'm all ears. This forum has been loads of help. Thanks
Just curious but why the steering conversion instead of the Currie currectlync kit? Aside from the obvious price difference. Or is price the only issue? I am eyeing the Currie setup as my next larger purchase

I think if I was running 35s and had 4" of lift I definitely would. I may end up going that route eventually If I feel its needed.

Picked up the LJ today in Kentucky, now for a 9 hour drive back home. Came with the unopened VHS as a bonus. 26,000 miles.

I have managed to get a few more minor things done:

Went through clean and detailed.
Changed the oil / spark plugs (went with the autolite iridium plugs XP985)
Removed rear steel bumper and tire carrier (I swear combined they weighed a TON)
Removed front bumper and the Warn Tabor 9k winch (I plan to go through the winch a bit and refresh it)
Removed the side steps
Bought front and rear OE bumpers for $20 bucks each off of FB marketplace. Both were in great shape
Took off milk jugs cleaned them up with Simple Green and ordered mopar end caps and plastic anchors
I plan to prime and paint the OE bumpers to make them look nice again, don't think Ill chop them. Got new hardware for the bumpers

There is a bunch of parts in my living room that my wife is starting to get annoyed by that include - Metalcloak lift, savvy cable shifter, zj steering, and sway loc ........all waiting to be installed.

Well, going to have a LJ rolling around on Canyon wheels here pretty soon. Unfortunately my Ravine wheels have gotten some corrosion underneath the clear coat. I really would prefer the Ravine over the Canyon wheel , but I ended up getting the canyon wheels for $20 a piece......as opposed to getting the Ravines refinished which would be around $150 per wheel.

Canyons are my #1 favorite TJ wheel.
