Using a J-hook on the axle to secure a Jeep to a trailer

I was talking to someone about towing my Jeep on a trailer. Specifically, about how it's a hassle to use 2" wide axle straps. He said I should just use a J hook, which will make it much simpler. Does anyone use a J hook when hauling your Jeep on trailer? Something like this:

I used to use them a lot when I worked for a shop building tow trucks in high school . I was going to use them for my jeep but there was something about them that made me change my mind, I think it had something to do with the angle they needed to be at with my 3 link setup out back

I would think with how clean you like to keep your Jeeps, the possibility of the J hook scratching your axle would be a deterrent...

If it's something you're going to do often enough weld a bracket onto the axles.

Mac's Tie Downs and Barnes have precut ones...along with a bunch of others...or roll your own.

FWIW, the front axle isn't a problem with the 2" straps. The rear is the issue. There really isn't a good place on either side to use the straps without going over the hard brake. Technically, the rear passenger side can be made to work, but not the rear driver's side. At least I haven't found a spot to out the strap that I'm comfortable with. After looking closer, the J hooks wouldn't help me there. :(

Nope, no crawling under. You can get the straps over the tires without even touching the jeep.
The issue I have is my trailer. It's aluminum and doesn't have the ability to tie down from the sides like the tire straps I'm seeing. I have to use the front and rear floor loops.

Looks good! I really have thought about moving to this method or a tire net. I have also seen those last straps used to go over the tire but not sure how good that would work.

Any damage/scratching to the wheels if they get muddy? I guess one could wipe them down really quick where the strap runs through.

They’re already scratched from the rocks lol. But if you clean the wheel and use an axle strap with an abrasion sleeve to go through the wheel, there is no issue to the wheel or strap.

Thanks. My wheels are too. I was more wondering if it would create a very noticed sand paper effect where the strap was ran through the wheel. My axle straps definitely leave rub/webbing marks on my axle housings.

I haven’t had any issues and I’ve towed for thousands of miles at a time.
