Interesting that you got the old design without the cutout steel sides.

So did I, arrived yesterday!

I think the price just went up a little bit. It's now $509.

Yes, it did. I just looked at the price last week to see if it had gone up since I placed my order in February at $489, and I was surprised that it hadn't gone up...

I ordered both to compare, wasn't sure which I wanted. Heres a breakdown difference.

All and all, the UCF is comparable to the Savvy, IF you want it tucked. Interestingly, the Savvy uses T joint welds vs UCF's Square or Corner joint welds. I have heard that T joints are stronger, but with the force being mostly from below during a "encounter", the pressure distribution would be better on the T joint.
To address questions of weight difference, the Savvy uses Steel brackets for the body mounts which are bolted to the Aluminum skid. The UCF is a single welded Aluminum skid. Yes, the Savvy has 12 lbs of steel added to it.

We already know from the Savvy bumper that a weld done in an area like that is a very poor answer to anything that will do battle with rocks. Also precisely the reason that it doesn't exist on the Savvy version. Also why the mount flanges are steel and bend around to pick up the two sides. If you do something very stupid which blows up those two welds that hold the side on, the bolts will retain the bits and keep the tank in the skid.

If that 11 1/4" number is accurate, that skid has to be run with some amount of body lift.

I can vouch for that and this is 1/4". To be fair it's probably 10 years old or more and only cracked a year or two ago. Nothing to complain about really. It's been getting progressively worse so time for a new one. I'll be getting Savvy next time for other reasons. If it lasts as long I'll be happy.

I also spotted something in those photos that show something very elegant about the Savvy design. No big welds on the bottom other than to attach the sides, none of the bends are abrupt/sharp and everything is done with the material properties in mind, just like the bumpers. The devil is always in the details and 6061-T6 by itself doesn't make something better.

Thanks @ncraig for the side by side shots.

I fully believe that and I looked at those pictures several times now but I can't figure out what you're referring to that doesn't exist on the Gas Tank Skid. Is the "area" totally not there or maybe bent better, or is the weld not there because it would make the area weak?

I'm also having some trouble understanding this. All I really need to know is if I order one from Savvy today, is there a chance I'd end up with a skid plate that doesn't have sides? I thought no sides was an early TJ factory style and something I want to avoid.

The redesign from last year has sides just like it always has. The difference is that the redesign has steel sides and they have triangular cutouts in those steel sides.

Savvy is not copying the early TJ skid in any way.

Just wanted to say that I went through Savvy's Amazon site for the cable shifter and it shipped the next day...got it really fast. Maybe people will have better luck with that item there.

It makes you wonder if there is a separate computer in the office that rings when an order is placed through Amazon.
