Hello,

I recently purchased an 05 rubicon unlimited. The other day I was climbing a longer hill when I could smell something was burning. All gauges checked out good. When I opened the hood I was greeted with this.

The manifold was glowing bright red. I have done a lot of searching on this topic and it seems that plugged cats are one likely solution.

However I have read that if the cats are plugged the engine won't want to rev due to back pressure in the exhaust. It seems to rev okay but is definitely down on power compared to my previous 4.0 Jeep.

Thank you.

I'd be willing to bet the cats are plugged. Yes, typically the engine won't want to rev as much if they are plugged, but that's not always the case.

My bet is indeed on the pre-cats.

Here's a few options for pre-cat replacements on your 2005:

Walker Pre-Cats (53529)
Eastern Catalytics Pre-Cats (20379)

I went with the Walker one myself when I had to replace my front cats.

Thank you for the quick replies. I was guessing the same but wanted a second opinion. I will look at those walker cats.

Hopefully Nicholas Cage doesn't come steel my Jeep.

Another option if your handy is to remove the cat pipe, knock out / pull out the material in the cat & re-install. Thats almost a no cost test to see if it's the cats. it doesn't throw any codes.

And if we're talking about O2 sensors, remember to always use NTK / NGK replacements. Anything else will not function properly on a TJ!

Okay. Jeep is back in the shop.

Exhaust checks out. Cats check out from back pressure test. They are thinking a couple things. Tempting to change anyway. Just to cross it off the list for sure

Sensor causing it to run lean
Or somehow fuel is getting into the exhaust while it is still burning.
