Any stereo gurus on here?

The best way to fix this problem is get a 12V power supply, pull the unit out of the jeep and bench test it. Let it power up with just B+, Ignition on together and ground to the negative of the supply. No speakers, no nothing else. If it boots up fine its an issue with the wires. Its entirely possible that something in the poor wiring situation could have caused some speaker wires or RCA cable somewhere to melt and fuse together creating a ground or short situation in the wiring. Any time I am faced with a failed install like this bench testing is the first go to before messing with any of the in vehicle wiring.

He found a shop that will remove the entire system with wiring, supply and install a Kenwood HU and rewire the whole mess correctly from scratch for sub 2000 so he will likely go that route.
