The front seal on my 97 Jeep automatic transmission started leaking after it was sitting for about 6 months anybody know how hard it is to change the front seal

I have the same problem, leaking out of the torque converter. I took my 2001 Jeep TJ with 4.0 automatic trans(no overdrive) to have the transmission pan gasket replaced and transmission oil changed and now leaks from the front where torque converter is at. I told mechanic it was leaking still and took it back and they redid the trans pan gasket for free again but they saw it leaking from the from the front and they don't do rebuilds or take down tranny only do tranny oil changes. I called around some tranny shops here in town and one told me to check my tranny fluid level first to see if overfilled and sure enough it is. I drove it around for about 3 weekends, not long drives before I checked this. Would any damage occur? I checked youtube and found out how to extract tranny fluid through the dip stick so will be doing that to get it to normal levels and see if it leaks still. Any advise would be grateful.

Tis far better to have an automatic transmission overfilled than underfilled. Being overfilled didn't hurt anything. I routinely keep mine about 1/2 quart overfilled, it prevents the transmission ATF pickup tube from sucking air during a steep climb. When that happens it's like shifting into neutral.

Thanks Jerry, mine right now is about 2 inches to maybe 2 and 1/2 inches over the "Max" line so it has to be more then a quart to be pushing it out of the Torque converter seals in the front. Glad to hear no damage though.

Did you check it with the engine running at operating temp, trans in neutral? Although having just filled mine up from literally empty, I'm pretty confident that if you're at that level hot or cold you've got too much fluid in there.

(also don't be afraid to start a new thread over bumping a 3 year old thread that got no traction)
