Redux

Those, and:
  • Pennzoil 10w30 conventional I had laying around in the garage that somebody gave me years ago.
  • Mobil 1 5w30 that I drained out of my new LS3 crate engine.
  • Valvoline 5w30 high mileage
  • I think I also had mix of Amsoil 5w30 and leftover quart of Valvoline 5w30 at one point too.
And it looks like they have all returned more or less the same results barring a few outlier elements per change in fluid

The first thing I noticed was the high moly which is an additive from the Amsoil and the Mobil 1 which are both true synthetics (synthetic base compared to others refining a natural base).

Moly is great on paper, but it didn't seem to do anything helpful in this engine. After seeing this, I certainly wouldn't buy extra moly as an additive to add to the oil.

With warmer weather on the horizon up there in the North West, are you expecting any big changes with the Jeep for the Spring/Summer?

It's amazing how quickly the TJ/unlimited Wranglers erode away in that weather up there.

Having it in the climate controlled garage and regular car washes helps, but salt spray during the winter months doesn't help regardless. The paint the shop had sprayed on the frame is still a rust problem that needs wire brushing and repainting — the few places I painted have held up great so far. I also have my Savvy tummytuck take off that I want to install to replace the Rokmen steel belly skid. Heated seats, replace speakers, and a few little things. Aside from that, not many big plans to change this one. Certainly nothing ground breaking. I do need to replace several leaky seals. So, sad to say, but this build is pretty much done and has entered maintenance phase.

It works great as it is on and off road and hasn't had any reliability issues at all. It seems to fit the needs we ask of it well.

Once my red LJ is completed, I'm sure building something else will spark my fancy. ;)

House projects are mostly complete for the summer so back to the Jeeps!

Because the house projects took longer than expected, and my truck (which I'd like to have while dialing in the Red LJ and for towing it to get AC work done) is being built significantly later than expected (thanks supply chains!). I've decided to run the Alcan 5000 TSD rally race with the Kahki TJ instead.

So time to prep and do some small repairs after TJ Fest in Moab.

A little preview of what we'll be doing:

Shortly after Hells Revenge we got a flat. Discount Tire was awesome and replaced it free of charge, no questions asked.

They did mention while balancing the others that one rim was bent, and sure enough it has about 1/8" of runout in both directions.

Enjoy the rally, Looks like an awesome tour of the Yukon Territory. I plan to drive the Denali Hwy ~140 mile gravel road (not on the route) in July and possibly a trip south on the Alcan in August.

The power steering leak has been dry since April. Maybe cold weather changing tolerances and causing the leak?

Either way, the plan is to replace this with HA soon.

I fixed it before, but the RMS was leaking pretty bad at at Moab. Lost 3 quarts on the trip (filled up at gas stations along the way)! @rasband said that I get to blame the previous owner for the RMS 3 times. So this is all @Chris' fault!

Got it fixed Saturday afternoon and so far no more leaks.

Oil report came back. For context, this was Walmart 5w30 synthetic + 3 quarts of cheapest 10w30 gas station oil available in South Dakota to replenish the leak. I had increased the interval because of the leak changing the oil for me.

Now we're running a mix of 5qt Pennzoil synthetic 10w30 + 1qt Amsoil Signature 10w30.
