So How Terrible Are The 05-06 Model Years, Really?

I was thinking the same thing basically when I was typing that but I hate to sounds smug to four-cylinder owners- Which to me is really ridiculous when you only have a 4.0-

Sort of like telling a homeless person to get their act together when you live in a motel....

Have you ever seen people shout at homeless people and tell them to get a job ??? I’m like dude he’s wearing his underwear on the outside of his pants, For some reason I don’t think he has his resume polished up...

ANDY I cant believe you would talk bad about the 4.0 ... that white one you have TAKES OFF LIKE YOU HAVE JATO !!! y'all dont let andy bullshit you ! He, John Cooper and I were going to a trail ride, Andy in front and we all had 4.0's. Andy takes off like a fucking bullet, John and I can not even think about keeping him in sight !!!!! 👨‍✈️🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀

My cousin-in-laws are German on her side. After sitting through endless family gatherings with her parents, uncles, etc. present where the above sentiment was expressed over and over with more smugness than was tolerable, my uncle finally had enough. He stood up during one of their smarmy little rants and said "Ya'll know what Germany is known for? That's right, small cars and big women". Slammed the door on his way out and never attended another family gather with them present.

Thank you so much for that- I haven’t had a good laugh all day buddy I needed one right now. The only people from Europe I’ve ever met that were worse were Danes.....And I’m not kidding. Rigid and arrogant.

I love people like your uncle that tell it like it is- My father-in-law is the same way and when I asked him how he felt about the bombing of Hiroshima when they were commemorating the anniversary one time he said - “ hey, they started it”.

Anyway thank you I just got word that my mother has three blood clots and a do not resuscitate order- She had surgery yesterday and just never came out of anesthesia like we expected- I’m not trying to trump or dump on the thread with my drama- My family has been very fortunate as far as things like this for a long long time. I bet that a lot of people on here are at the age where caring for their parents is getting to be more and more of a reality.

You guys could not see through your dirty windshields in order to drive the proper speed.. And John was up there shoving rubber ducks in his pants...

maybe my German ancestry explains why I like small (but fast) cars and big women.

They aren't terrible. There are issues mainly the ODPA. I haven't heard many good things about the 6-speed manual transmission. I'd rather have the NV-3550 5-speed or whatever the old one was before that. With all that said I'd still rather have an 05/06 Wrangler than a new one. Fix the ODPA and your good to go!

Well, I have an ‘04, and the ODPA has never failed.

Just sayin’…

Lol German engineering much?
You gotta pick two man, things don't add up here

Germans are not bad engineers , However they typically have such tunnel vision they fail to see the " big picture ".
That and as a culture Germans stereo typically lack the ability to admit ANY problem or failure with their engineering.
In the end EVERY problem is the customer's fault or lack of maintenance.
This little gem is an Audi 4.2 V-8 , 40 valves , 4 timing chains , endless fragile plastic chain guides that are known to fail, and perhaps the most German
engineering marvel.
You are looking at the rear of the engine , the engine has to be pulled out of the car to repair the wasted guides and chains , about $ 8000.00 parts and labor !

But hey the engineers reduced the chain noise heard from the front of the engine !

I once had to test a water level light my company was thinking about importing from Germany. It was designed to be installed in an industrial lead acid battery. These lights are mostly used on fork trucks, so predominantly 24, 36, or 48v batteries. The light was designed to work on 12v. So, you pick your cell, drill the hole, install the light and connect the ground to that cell and count 6 more in series and install your positive lead there.

My testing included what would happen to the light if it were over voltage, under voltage, reversed polarity, etc. It failed, under all conditions. Over and under voltage, it would fail to "full" which means an operator may not water the battery. Dry batteries can short internally and do very bad things. Reversed polarity, and it just quit working, DOA.

When I submitted my report, the German engineer could not understand why I even tested those things. He couldn't get his head around needing to design for the lowest common denominator in intelligence. It was quite comical. Needless to say, we did not import that product.

German electronics aren't generally well regarded, although Telefunken made great radios back in the day. If you want good electronics, buy Japanese.

Tell the truth - it was @Apparition wasn’t it….

Not factoring that in resulted in one of my more embarrassing design mistakes. Ambulance main bench with under seat storage have the ability to transport a stretcher on the seat in a multi-casualty event where units have to transport more than one patient. As such, they have two sets of seat belts, ones down low for the proper placement if you are sitting on the bench and then higher ones that connect to the buckles on retractors under the seat. Being the smart guy that I am, I matched up the bench sets to each other and the gurney sets to each other. They had to cut a nurse out of the oddball combination when she managed to jam a buckle set together with so much force that they couldn't push the latch and pull them apart.
It was quite comical.
No, it really wasn't. But, when I got done, every buckle would accept any other half no matter what you tried to make them do.

Oops! Live and learn. At least you weren't designing the air scrubbers for the Apollo 13 mission!

One thing that makes the 4.0 so bad now is just how much better everything else got.
One thing? That's sorta bullshit. Go look up the GM Atlas 4200 for what should have been in the TJ. Then look around at the motors they put in Dodge Trucks, Vipers, etc. They had the tech, the know-how and the means, they just didn't do it and when they finally did, they put that piece of shit in the 07 JK. That just tells you they didn't give a shit back then, and didn't ever really start until it became obvious they didn't have a choice.

That 4200 inline engine is kinda weird. Well, the engine itself is pretty good. GM was weird about it. All that time and money to develop it, then they used it in like one model years worth of vehicles... And then let it die.
