Attempting to sort out the exterior lighting circuits on a '98 Sport.

What works:
  • headlight high and low beam. The headlight switch seems worn/aged as need to find the sweet spot which is just before the end detent
  • all six parking/running lights (2 per fender, 2 at rear)
  • both stop lights (3rd brake light not installed, but verified 12V at connector)
  • right/pass side turn signals- front and rear lights work, IP indicator flashes and relay clicks normally
What's not working:
  • hazard switch. No IP indicators seen, no relay clicking heard, none of the exterior lights flash
  • left/driver side turn signals
    • relay rapidly clicks like a missing/bulb failure
    • rear tail light flashes rapidly
    • left IP indicator light does not illuminate
    • neither fender light illuminates or flashes. With running and/or headlights on, the fender lights remain steady-state illuminated
  • horn.
    • I just installed a new Dorman clockspring, still no joy for the horn.
  • airbag light on- not a concern at this time, just another bit o' data or a red herring.

At this point I'm going to chuck a turn signal switch from the parts pile and hope for the best. I don't think I have a spare flasher relay and I'm not interested to try and have my credit card figure out the problem.

Curious to know WTJF's opinion- bad switch, relay, mouse-chewed wires, voodoo curse, etc

Did these problems exist prior to the installation of the new clock spring ?
Check the MFS wiring and connectors for signs of melting or dirty connections.

Yes, the clock spring didn't improve or degrade the situation.

Yes, will have to check MFS connections and such. The Jeep last ran, ~12 years ago and the PO was muddin' when he grenaded the motor, so yea, finding mud everywhere. . . still.

I had similar weirdness going on when I went to LED tails. It was the flasher relay. I studied a few threads here to figure it out. I don’t remember the exact relay I bought , but it was expensive (like 35 bucks) from Amazon.

Closure update!

It was the. . . . multi-function (turn signal) switch. Before swapping, I cleaned and reset the connection. No joy. I swapped out the MFS and everything works as intended. The lighting circuit on the POS is finished!

The defuct switch would alternate the fender blinking sequence, which I thought was neat. Now the lights blink in unison. But, they blink.
