What music makes you feel good about being alive?

There's too many songs to name, but I think in general people always most enjoy the music they listened to as they came of age during their late teens. For me that's alternative rock of the 90s. Bands like Live, Toadies, Candlebox, STP, Offspring, Everclear, Cake, Foo Fighters, Weezer, No Doubt... It doesn't matter that it's not objectively the best music I've heard...none of those would make a list of my favorite musical artists which would include Zeppelin and Floyd, Rush, Metallica, Queen, Dio, Dream Theater, Coheed &Cambria, Trivium and Opeth when they're not growling... there's just something about 90s alternative that brings me to a time and place when life was new and easy.

I don’t see too many people mention Dream Theater. My son just got back from Mike Portnoy’s place a few days ago (one of the original 3 founding members and drummer from 1985-2010). My son shot two music videos for Mike’s sons band, Tallah. Pretty cool stuff…

Mike Portnoy is how I discovered DT, and I learned about Portnoy when Avenged Sevenfold released Nightmare, which IMO was their peak. Maybe the cultural fit wasn't there with him and the band, but they screwed up letting him go from a musical standpoint.

Almost every style of music in the 90's had a huge, genre-altering divergence (and for the better) - it most certainly was a golden era!

What's funny is during the 90's I felt like I was born 10 years later than I was supposed to be because I always preferred stuff from the 70s and 80s. I still like older stuff but nostalgia has improved my perception of the 90s. No lie, probably the last 3 concerts I've been to have been 90's cover bands.

You're correct about it being every style...just looking at mainstream rock, it's interesting to look back at the pendulum swings from the partying and excesses of the hair bands of the 80s, to the more simply produced and serious grunge, then back to a lighter, more fun tone in the mid-late 90s alternative, then the post grunge stuff. If I have a memory that I can't quite place the year for, I just have to look up the music I associate with that time and see what year it was popular. One genre that I think got worse instead of better in the 90s was metal. That's when even the harsh scream vocals that still at least carried a note really became widely replaced by cookie monster growling and I stopped even looking for new metal to listen to. It's really a shame because there is some masterfully written and performed stuff out there instrumentally, and then they have to go ruin it with "the most annoying sound in the world".

Except for nu metal. That needs to die and stay dead.

Depends on the day. I really enjoy most genres of music. Nothing like the right song and the right moment meeting up for you to feel alive.

My playlist is pretty eclectic. I’ve been on a Trampled by Turtles kick lately. But I was cutting the grass yesterday and Traffic (Mr Fantasy) came and it felt great in that moment…I have no idea why but I was on cloud 9😂

If I’m with my hood rat friends from my youth or the gym Ni***s in Paris (Kanye/JayZ) always pumps me up🤷🏻‍♂️
