How full do you fill your gas tank before hitting the trails?

Title pretty much says it all. Assuming stock tank and wheeling on a random Saturday and easy access to gas station at the end of the day or trailer.

I don't think I've ever used more than 1/2 tank and usually closer to 1/4

Hard to say, it depends a lot on how much you're in 4Lo and the length of the trail. For what you described I'd think 1/2 tank is plenty. I've been on some longer trails completed the same day however where I started with 1/2 tank though but was very nervous at the end about having enough gas to make it to a gas station.

I always fill mine, never know what I might encounter

I stay in 4Lo most of the time, otherwise I'm behind someone with an automatic transmission that likes to start and stop all day long.

I was taught and always start as full as I can manage but the description of your Saturday run is something I almost never see. Often it's two hours round trip for me to get fuel. Recently I had a member of our group break down and I was shuttling people/gear, it was four hours to get gas and 100 miles round trip because the pumps at Kennedy Meadows were down. If I tried to wing it on what I thought the day required I'd have been stuck. If your Jeep is kinda just used as a buggy I can see not filling it. For me I think the 50 lbs is worth the piece of mind, same reason I carry a spare. If I had a trailer at the trail head I probably wouldn't worry about that either.

THIS ! Full is the correct answer in my world.

I'd rather have a little extra than a little not enough ! but that's just me, just like some will drive until the low fuel light has been on for 20 miles before looking for a station. ever seen the idiot walking down the street carrying a gas can ? yea that ain't me 🤣

I like to use a trailer if it's over 2 hours away otherwise I'll take my chances. Either way there are plenty of places around me that have gas stations near the trails. I do drive my jeep whenever I can around town so it isn't a trailered only jeep.

Just something that came to my mind at the end of my last trip. Again had over 1/2 tank left but didn't completely fill up.

The unexpected and extreme angles that can uncover the fuel pump pickup can be minimized with a simple trip to the gas station!

Why wouldn’t you fill it?

Cause I like to live life dangerously.

I fill mine at the gas station closest to the trailhead. Every single trip.
I also never leave the Jeep idling on the trail any time I stop. I’ve been out a few times on Winter runs where we would burn at least twice as much fuel than if the trails were dry.
A few Winter trips ended up unintentionally well after midnight and getting to the gas station with the low fuel light on. Not very comforting.

After a couple of those trips I started carrying extra fuel, especially during Winter runs (although I have never ran out yet)

Depends how hard the trail is, how close I am to a gas station, and how long I'll be on the trail. I am conscious of it and plan accordingly.
