My 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sport has a problem. When i first start it up it's ok for about 2-3 mins then starts to make a popping sound, sometimes less time.
It loses power, but i use the clutch and use the gas and then it makes loads more popping sounds (it sounds like clearing crap out) and feels like all power is lost.
Then it just comes to life and all is ok until i turn it off again and then it does it again. Does not matter if it's 10 hours or 2 mins, i get the same problem.

Living in Gran Canaria we are limited in garages with any knowledge about this. I've already been told plugs and leads (so i changed them),
Carbon build up so i had stuff put in my fuel to clean it. No better at all.

Please, if someone can help identify the problem i would be so grateful as i don't want to cause long-term problems jo my Jeep
I love driving it but am scared to at the moment.

lean backfire sounds like, check your fuel filter and pump pressures....there is a mesh in the tank that can also get clogged...

When you are using the gas and the clutch you are getting popping sounds. During time are you smelling unburned fuel or do you see black exhaust while the clearing crap out ?
This could be indications of a or several leaking or dirty fuel injectors ?
Are the fuel injectors the originals ?

Thanks for your reply, how do i do that? How do i check the pressure and what should it be? How do i check the mesh in the tank? sorry i don't know a lot about the way they run but the garages out here don't have a clue so i need to read up on it and give it a try myself.

I've had the Jeep for 16 years so i guess the fuel injectors are the original ones.
YES, when i use the gas and clutch together i get the popping sounds, it's how i clear it.
I don't smell anything but my nose was broken many years ago so i don't smell much.

Fuel pressure can be checked by attaching a pressure gauge to the schraeder valve on the injector manifold; the pressure at idle should be 49 psi.
Accessing the mesh filter will require the removal of the fuel pump from the fuel tank.

Ok, thank you. I will have to take it to a garage to get that done but at least now i have something to look for.

How do i check for this please? I want to go to a garage with as much info as possible as this has been going on for 1 year now and i'm worried about how much damage can/will be caused.
Also, one of the garages put a liquid in to clean them as he said that might be the problem. Years ago in England, we called it Redex.
Would it help to treat it again?

Google is your friend in this matter, do a search, rent the tool from autozone and then start experimenting to troubleshoot the problem. Clogged converter maybe a problem too.

I'm in Gran Canaria, a small island not far from Morroco. We do not have autozone or anything like that. But thank you for your reply anyway.

Ok, plan 2, remove valve core like a tire has, in the fuel injection line test port. used an old dial type tyre gauge and have someone run the engine while watching the pressure.

Is this way reliable? or just a gauge to go by?

Thank you, i've told my mechanic to try this.
He will have the Jeep later in the week,
I will let you know the results.
Thanks again

Where is Gran Canaria? Do they have camels there?

If the gauge is not sealed by screwed onto the test port; the pressure observed on the gauge will be less than what the pressure actually is depending upon how much fuel leaks out between the test port and gauge .
You really should use a fuel pressure gauge to get an accurate reading.
Do you have access to deliver by Amazon ?
They have the tool for $28.50
