Heading out to rescue my TJ from Columbus, Ohio tomorrow — Might need some advice

Well, advice is not timely. I install flat tow wiring on mine last night. My simple solution to moving it when the engine does not run or I don't have a spare driver. That said, $500 for a car moving company might cost me some real money down the road if I want to get outboarding done. Driving it over a 1000 miles, flying home, flying back and driving it back was very close to being the deal breaker for me. $500 is close enough to air fair that I could save 6 days of driving. That said, putting on Rancho's this week and trying to decide if outboarding is more than I actually need. A few months of driving with it basically finished will be the deciding vote.

This has been a neat thread to follow because of the potential heartbreak/risk/reward factor. Happy you got it started. Please document your journey back to AZ.

I made it Joplin, MO. Jeep's running great, but I noticed something weird after passing by Indy. The fog lites were flashing on their own, not switched on at all.

This TJ came with factory fog lites, but those are aftermarket. I installed them using the existing wiring but used a relay to actually power them directly from the battery via fuse. The relay was turning off and on. The pattern was not as regular as it appears. Turning the lites on for real causes them to switch to a much slower rate. I can hear a relay clicking in the dash. Bumps affect it a lot.

It was probably doing this all across Indiana. I didn't notice until it started to get dark enough. So if you hear of some crazy guy in a jeep flashing everyone to get out of his way. That was me!
I pulled the fuse to stop it, but I still hear the relay trying to keep them going. Absolutely no other symptoms or other effects.

First thing in the morning... got a hotel for whats left of tonight.

Play with your multi function switch. Mine randomly come on and off as well. Mine is from a worn spot where the fog light part of the switch doesn’t fully depress to switch them off. Mine will randomly come on with the Jeep off. I haven’t gotten around to fixing it. Play with the switch to see how it affects what’s going on.

Could rent a uhaul and tow dolly (or flat trailer) to get it home

UHaul has a policy that forbids using a tow dolly to tow a Wrangler. You have to rent a flat trailer.

OP, nice to see your a good way down the road. I’d also put the original ECM back on the Jeep. Hoping you continue to have good trip!

Did you read the part where he said that he's already back home? Or is this for future reference?

Oops! I read Mesa AZ, but did not realize that was home. My bad.

The tow situation at uhaul is just good to know. I was surprised. The employee could not really tell me why. He said it was company policy. He said something probably happened once with a Wrangler and they didn’t want to carry the risk any longer.

there are quite a few private and dealer rentals around here for car haulers, i looked at prices b4 Moab last yr and they don't care if your haulin a 60 yr old rust bucket or grampa's tractor, but as soon as you mention jeep it's all uhhh, ummm, ya know............ if that's not the case,' then it's, oh that was an old price we need to update the web site.

I’ve had the “old price we need to update” game played with me and I just keep saying, “That’s the advertised price. You should’ve changed it. Ring me up.” Happened in a few restaurants Too. That’s a stupid thing to do bc your tip just vanished.
