Does it truly matter if a progressive rate spring is installed with the tighter coils down? Some folks say tight coils are always up, while others say it doesn't matter. Which is it?

The only way it matters is if there are two different pigtails on the coil which on the rear of a TJ there is not.

If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me the springs were upside down on my 99 TJ because the tight coils were down....

...I still wouldn't be rich but I might be able to buy myself a decent lunch.

Exactly my reason for asking the question. A guy who is supposedly an expert with jeeps told me that my Springs were mounted upside down. I told him it didn't matter. He said I didn't know what I was talking about!

Don't you hate those "experts".

I prefer my Currie logos to be right side up. 🤣

Are we talking front or rear springs? Front axle coil buckets are formed to hold the looser end of the coil.

Edit: I meant to say the end that is more open

The kicker for me was that they were talking about my FRONT springs, which only go in one way.

Some doofus telling me I don't know what I'm talking about is an express ticket to a show of biting sarcasm they're unlikely to know how to respond to.

I presume you asked him to explain, and when you did, what did he say?

How significant a difference is there between uniform vs. progressive rate springs, ride quality, handling, etc?

If it was a true progressive rate coil versus progressive wound there would be a difference compared to a linear rate coil but I am not aware of any true progressive rate coils for the TJ.

I aint puttin no commie springs on my American jeep. Next thing you know it'll be smelling like patchouli and refusing to work.

THEORETICALLY, tight springs down will have less unsprung weight while the tight springs are working, and more unsprung weight once the tight springs are compressed.

In practice it dont matter.

what did he say?

That he's been doing this for years and knows from experience. When I asked him how the spring would compress differently with the tight coils on bottom, he told me I was just being a jerk (not exactly the word he used!). ;)
