Are all 4.0 engines the same over the years?

My beloved 97 originally had a 2.5 in it. Prior to me buying it, a Jeep shop swapped the 2.5 out with a 4.0.... I was told it was a 01 or 02 motor. So now the oil pan (see photo) needs, or at least I want to replace it, in shopping there seems to be a difference 91-99 is one and 00-06 is another..... So which one would you go with? I'm thinking the earlier one as more likely they changed something on the car rather than the block.
BTW; Someone please explain to me how the skid plate for these can be so expensive? Ones I have seen look like they should be $40 not $400ish!

If it's not leaking from the drain plug I absolutely would not replace the pan. From what I've seen most of the aftermarket pans don't fit well and leak, and OEM is expensive.

Yes, a good engine skid is not cheap. Ones that just mount to the engine and transmission are not recommended either as they can damage them. Should stick with one that mounts to the frame and transfer case skid.
