got 4 new tires mounted today, asked to check ball joints as i am 2 months late for massachusetts inspection and have been waiting to afford getting the tires on. said steering damper was gone, and u-joints are toast. just ordered a rancho 5407, but don't know anything about u-joints. and i am really scrounging to figure out how to pay for anything else.
how much hassle to do it myself? i'm broke as hell, but realize if it had been ball joints i would have not bothered to do it myself. however probably would have needed a couple months to get he cash to pay anyone else to get it done.
how much should i expect to pay for it to be done VS me in my own garage.

I just replaced the driver side u-joint last weekend, which was my first time. As stated above, there are plenty of great videos out there, and some parts stores rent tools out for a reasonable price.

How long did it take you to complete the job?

About 5 hours. I live in Maine so every bolt was a fight. The joint itself wasn't much of a problem once I figured out the best way to secure the assembly to keep it from flopping around. I'm hoping to get the passenger side done in half the time now that I kinda know what I'm doing.

For your axle shaft u-joints I'd go with nothing else but a Spicer 5-760x. It's a direct replacement for what the factory installed but it's significantly stronger and more durable.

If you end up needing driveshaft u-joints go with the Spicer 5-1310x. Same deal, they're stronger and more durable than what the factory installed.

I believe you meant 5-1310x unless he has a Rubicon.
