Solo wheeling vs clubs

I am enjoying the thang we got going here in the Phoenix area. Informal trips with peeps from this site. Makes it even better having out of towners go with us.

Thanks to @Chris for this site as we are able use it to organize trips. The social thang I do not get. Meet at a bar to bench race is not for me. We did once run a trail that ended at a bar. That was cool. Hung out a bit. I inhaled a couple PBR's.

Down here I usually wheel on the outskirts of Sonoita and there's a great brewery to wash down the dust or eat some great food. I've lived here 3 years and feel I'm just scratching the surface of trails here.

Sadly, there is no AZ Proud like button.

I have never been to Sonoita but have been east of there at Ft Huachuca and Sierra Vista.

Did the club thing years ago. Some were good some not so much. Now days just try to find like minded folks to wheel together when I don't feel like going solo.

I would like to participate in a group ride but my work schedule makes it so hard. I just have to go when I can go. For example this summer my brother and I took my tj out and did the Rubicon all by ourselves. Then later this summer I planned on participating in the Dusy Ershim ride posted here but when it came down to it I just couldn’t get away.

I'm in MA and literally everything is off limits to passenger vehicles. There are some legal single track and ATV trails around but everything else is private property or owned by the state and "No Offroad Vehicles Allowed". Not to say people don't go wheeling but you'll be paying bigtime if you get caught. Same goes with the neighboring states...at least close enough to the MA border.

So I need to either know someone who allows wheeling on their property or have to join a club as they do trail runs. I have been hesitant to join a club only for the fact that there may be tons of people with varying abilities and you can literally wait for an hour before you get to move sometimes.

Depending where you are in Mass, check out the North East Back Country Discovery Route. It runs through MA, PA, NY, VT, NH and ME all they way up to Canada. Although designed for Adventure Bikes (I’ve run it that way), it’s all dirt, gravel and rocky Class 4 public roads which would be great for some mild wheelin’, Great scenery as well.

Just because there is no public land, it doesn’t mean you can’t find some places to go. I was amazed at the number of great dirt trails up there.

Someday we'll wheel the Tennessee area, you can show me around.

Head south and hit SMORR with AMS417 in Missouri, then travel south to Hot Springs in Arkansas and wheel with me, then head East to AOP or Windrock and wheel with Nashville and Brian, then head up through Indiana and hit Badlands with Magnum and Bob.

There I planned your trip for you, just let me know when to put it on the calendar :)

That would be an awesome trip.

I’ve been in a couple clubs and have met some great people, but ya should do your research.
Any club/group advertising an open for all trail run on social media is probably going to turn into a shit show with tons of noobs that think there Jesse Haines behind the wheel. I’ve run into a couple groups like that and it is super annoying.
I don’t like solo though, at least for trail runs.

Never had any interest in wheeling with others. I spent many years dirt biking all over Colorado and Eastern Utah into remote areas before retiring to my Jeep. 90% of people ride 10% of the landscape. I was always fascinated watching the Jeep trains heading out onto the crowded trails while I was headed out to the empty outback where I could ride all day while seeing nobody.

I don't mind running solo, but it does limit what a guy can do to a certain extent. I have access to an extremely large area full of FSR's and 4x4 trails. The main issue with my area is very poor cell coverage due to it being coastal mountain range.

Having one or two other rigs makes for a great day if those drivers are like minded individuals. It's great to get out and enjoy the scenery but I like when I can share that experience with more than just myself.

Another key part of that is everyone being open to suggestions for where to go for the day. I was out with one "friend" recently who shot down every suggestion I had with comments like "oh I just did that one the other day" or "I've got a bad body mount and don't want to flex out my rig too much". So having a group that is open to everyone's ideas rather than playing follow the leader all f**kin day is an absolute must.
