Just installed JB Conversions super short SYE on a 1997 Wrangler 4.0L 5 speed and now the speedometer does not work. This SYE replaces the gear drive speedometer sensor with a tone ring and variable speed sensor (VSS). I have tightened and re-tightened yoke nut to 200+ foot pounds so I don’t believe it is a slipping tone ring issue.

The speedometer did work erratically on the second or third half mile test drive. I tightened the yoke nut and it worked seemingly OK for another half mile test drive. The next time out, a week or so later, it did not work and has not worked since.

Cluster diagnostics run OK, the speedometer moves up through and back through the quarterly progressions.

The VSS connector shows 5V+/- on the data (orange and white) wire and 5V+/- on the power (violet and orange wire using the ground (brown and yellow) wire.

I have also installed a SpeedoHealer in anticipation of re-calibrating the spedometer for a changed gear set. The SpeedoHealer appears to test OK. The speedometer will not register whether the SpeedoHealer is in the circuit or bypassed.

JB provided and I installed a replacement variable speed sensor (VSS) but the replacement did not solve the problem.

Thoughts? What’s the likelihood of two bad sensors? Data wire problem between the VSS and the computer/dash? What am I missing?

Does it work without the SpeedoHealer installed ? Try taking it out and see what happens .

Do you have a friend with a Rubicon ? If so that may be a way you could verify the sensor.

Unfortunately I don't. Pretty stumped on this one. I'm at the end of a 9 month build, and a functioning speedo is the only think keeping me from getting it inspected. I find it hard to believe that two speed sensors could be faulty, but I guess it's possible.
