What's going on with my lugnuts?

Hey guys, I’m super confused here. Last year my front left fell off while driving, luckily I was okay. I was confused because I was pretty sure I torqued all the lug nuts, figured maybe I forgot or something and thought it was just a weird happening.

Just now, I felt something weird and still being paranoid from that I got out and checked them all. Low and behold, my back right wheel was missing a lug nut and the rest were loose (1 very, 3 slightly). Now I’m beginning to get worried, because I can’t let that happen again. When I rotated my tires a few weeks ago, I remember torquing them all again. And then after, I went around and checked the torque on all of them to be sure. I torqued them to around 120ft lbs, I think factory spec is 100 but I wanted to be extra safe.

Can anyone think of some reason this is happening? Unless somehow I skipped a wheel twice? I can be dumb sometimes but that seems unlikely. I didn’t re-do the torque after 500 miles but I feel like most people don’t do that anyways, plus I don’t think I’ve ever driven 500 miles yet. Maybe next time I can do more than 120

I’ll also add that the first time was on my stock wheels and lug nuts, and now I have new wheels and different lug nuts

Is your wife angry at you or have you (or her) recently purchased a large life insurance policy?

I would verify the lug nut seat is correct for the wheel, then check the studs for damaged threads. If the threads are real sharp or the stud has an hourglass shape they are stretched and need to be replaced. I use 100 ft lbs for torque and have never had a problem. You may want to see if you can borrow a torque wrench from someone to verify yours is correct.

There is a stupid Tic-tock thing the kids are doing now of going around and loosening lug nuts of vehicles. Make sure you don't have any little punks going around doing that dumb ass crap. I have a friend witha JK that they have done it to twice. All the lugs I run are the tamper resistant type. I hate them, but so far no one has messed with my nuts, except those that should.

Many years ago I had a rear wheel shear off a pickup while towing a 12' enclosed trailer on the highway. Inspectionof the remaining studs showed they had been severely over tightened. To this day I change the wheel studs on any used vehicle I buy.

are you running aluminum wheels . if so I could see where over torqueing would cause the holes to elongate and make you think the lug nuts were backing off. by torqueing to 120 you could be inducing the problem !

My lug nuts need a special tool that I’ve never seen (not locking) cause they’re a weird shape so I doubt it, but possible

I use 90 ft-lbs. It definitely sounds like you have some stretched studs. I'd replace them all, to be safe. Also look at the type of lugnut you have vs what the wheel mfg recommends.
The wheels came with these lugnuts so I think I’m safe there

I’ll use 100 going forward, although I don’t think the extra 20 could have caused this. I wouldn’t think they’d be that sensitive

Especially because the first time this happened I was doing it to 100. I started doing 120 cause I wanted to be extra sure they wouldn’t come off again. But I definitely think it’s possible the previous owner could have gone way too tight with them

Well, if you really want to be extra sure, take them up to 250.

with super glue ! then watch them little fuckers try to loosen them, they'll bust a nut for sure ! their own !!!!!!

I once showed a gent that his lug studs were all hourglass shaped and I did not think it was safe to drive the vehicle with them in that condition. His reply? Oh, they've been like that for the last 50,000 miles and haven't failed yet. I don't talk to him any more.

He is also the one who told me I had to use a crisscross pattern to tighten the bolts holding on his stamped steel OEM sheet metal diff covers to stop them from leaking. I stopped what I was doing and said that if crisscross stops them from leaking, what pattern do I use to make them leak?
Huh? If one stops it, then a different one must make them leak, what is it?

Blank stare

Yeah, that's right, you don't know because there isn't one. The cover is thin sheet metal and the bolts win every single time. Stop bothering me.

Ahhh they’ve graduated from stealing trailer balls

I don’t blame you on not talking to him anymore. It is amazing how many people won’t fix safety items but will fix other things on a vehicle.

You should very carefully check that you have the correct style of lug nuts. Mistakes pulling parts out of warehouses are made all the time.
Well the first time this happened was with my stock wheels so I'm assuming thats not the issue. Which leaves either the studs or I'm doing it wrong
