Hi folks. Have a perplexing issues. When in 2wd or 4wd and turning all the way to steering stop I hear a grinding sound right front wheel (p/s) when moving. Back off the steering wheel a little and no noise. No noise when driving. No noise at any speed.

168,000 miles did replace driver side hub 4 years ago because wheel was loose. The passenger side is tight. Cannot create the sound on jack stands.

I can back off the wheel 1 inch and no noise. Also hard right to stop on grass no noise. Right bearing original. So I removed hub and axel and u joint was going bad (hard grease rust color in one cap but joint was still moving free.

So I replaced hub and u joint and the noise is still there. Could it be the Spyder gears in the front differential? This jeep has been amazing. At 168,000 miles it still has about 85% of it's original parts Any thoughts

A filled out profile with Jeep infromation would help, but lacking that, what size tires, and is the Jeep at stock height or lifted at all?

Ok here is the history. Purchased July 2013 with 58,000 miles. 2002 jeep TJ model X 5 speed 4.0. Tires purchased May 2014. Repairs done when purchased clutch/timing chain/shocks.

Tires installed May 2014. Front end still original (ball joints/tie rods all original still tight (greasable). The noise started about 2 years ago that could only be heard on hard right to full lock on steering wheel.

If you just let go of the wheel noise gone. No noise backing up at full lock. I actually on the driver side wheel stop bolt extended that bolt about 1/2 inch that will stop the noise.

Little about me I am 69 and did auto repair for 35 years (old iron 60's-70s) and never came across this. U joints back then either clicked when taking off or vibrate at road speeds. With this jeep there is no noise at any speed. No noise on grass or loose dirt only on hard ground and only right wheel. Maybe sound transfer from diff?. I appreciate your input. Thank you Anthony

Welcome! Could the noise be related to tire scrub at almost full steering lock? alignment ?
Do you have a way to video this and post it?

Could not upload the full video to big. Here is a real short

video of the noise. You will see forward with noise with steering at stop (hard Right). Does not make noise full right backing up.

Well Mitchrb1÷ colojeep÷TJ Jim ÷I Jim÷rouxbicon there is a shiny spot on the lower control arm about the diameter of a pencil. So my wife started the jeep and turning the steering to full stop without moving there was a gap of 1/2 inch.

As she moved forward at full right turn the gap closed up (don't understand that) and I could hear a slight thump where the knobby part of the tire was touching.

Here is where I can't rap my head around is rubber on metal making a grinding or scraping sound as in the video. These tires are wider then the originals tires but never heard the sound when tires were installed.

Front end is all original and tight (just passed inspection) but I will check the lower control arm maybe the brushing is worn enough to cause the arm to move. Tires are wearing perfect with no inside or outside wear.

With close to 80,000 miles on tires and more to go that is incredible for tires. Thank you for your input Mitchrb1÷ colojeep÷TJ Jim÷rouxbicon
