I realize jeep TJs ride rough, but was reading about how the rancho 5000x shock really helps to smooth out the ride both on and off road. My TJ currently has kyb gas-a-just shocks from previous owner and I have no idea how old. Currently running 31 inch tires with no lift. Assuming the kyb gas-a-just are relatively new, would there be much difference in ride and handling with the rancho 5000x?

TJ’s were the first ever coil spring jeeps, and they are designed to give a more comfortable ride than their predecessors- and do. They will ride and drive as good as any comparably sized small truck , if set up properly. They can beat you senseless if they aren’t.

We may not have the answer to that but we know tire pressure matters a lot as well.

I’d experiment and adjust the shock to the softer side at first maybe.

KYB Gas-A-Just Shock Absorbers are designed for cars that require precise control and a high coefficient of traction with any road surface. Gas-A-Just belongs to the category of self-adjustable shock absorbers - this functionality is provided by the use of a specially designed valve system, weather resistant shock absorber and high-pressure nitrogen.

I've had good luck with Monroe OE Spectrum on my stock suspension TJ. They are marketed as OE ride, not heavy duty, or offroad, or any other BS.

Anyone have any experience with KYB gas-a-just shocks on a TJ?

I have them on mine & they are great on the road/highway. I was bouncing all over the place going through Sycamore Creek riding area but I also didn't lower my tire pressure. Gonna try that next time.

Just curious, what other shocks have you run, and how did these compare?

Only other ones I've had were OEM 20 years ago that I can't remember enough to compare, and Rough Country 4" lift shocks 19 years ago that rode very rough. Also had Gabriel Hijacker air shocks and don't remember them good or bad. They were sourced using dimensions and weren't made specifically for a Jeep Wrangler.

i have used gas adjust KYB,s a number of times, they are my go to shock when i want to firm up a suspension(on the cheap)- slow down the weight transfer. I generally like them- i have not had them on a TJ and based on my past experience probably would not recommend them if your trying for a softer ride. so if you think its to firm with them, another brand maybe just the thing to try.
