I ran a WD hitch way back when I towed the rig with a 1/2 ton Yukon XL - and that truck really needed it. My current big diesel has always towed very well without it - even with the trailer pushing 9 or 10k. I've run 25,000 comfortable miles with this setup with no issues.

Well, since I still had the WD hitch setup (and after some nasty "air-bag shaming" from Ryan ), on a whim I decided to give it a try for my Moab trip this year. The difference was noticable. It went from a great ride to a fantastic ride. Noticably better steering feel, a bit less sway, and less porpoising.

Although probably not worth the effort for short trips (less than a few hours or so), I'll definitely continue to use it for long trips.

One nice feature about this setup is that is has built in sway control. That's the purpose of the control arm in the center.

Oh, and I did learn something about my setup in the process...

After seeing that I did move the rig back on the trailer just a bit...

Air-bag shaming, lol. I've got bags and an air system ready to go in mine, gooseneck life.

no turning back know (without a new box of cutoff wheels). both of those ramp brackets are burned on and just painted

i had to pull all the back end wires from that tube so i don't risk melting anything. i'll post pics when i get that mess cleaned back up.

paints dry, wires all back in the tube and i got 1 tail lamp and marker done, the other hung temporarily, i forgot my gusset on that side and have to do that fri/sat. that'll hold a rear side marker lamp too. i have leads for some reverse lamps, just haven't chosen any yet.
bars are in and drilled for hair clip pins, i need to grab some big washers and it'll do.

to finish the ramps i just need to put my pipe sliders through the ramp channels and weld those up and paint um.

pics as promised.

been doing what i can after work during the wk. the irony of it all is now i need a trailer to go fetch the decking.

i got my spare wheel carrier mounted. i got both of my front end stabilizer legs mounted. i hung a 6" channel across the A frame to accommodate the jack. i had to go with a slightly larger jack than i really needed, it's a 5k. it's the only type i found that'll go high enough/long enough to reach the ground and lift. i should be welding that in/on today. once retracted it'll hang just a bit deeper than the coupler plate.
it's been a real bitch to try and work under this thing, you can't see crap looking up into the bright sky. they did some big electrical panels at work and i ganked the cardboard they came wrapped in, big 4x7 sheets. i can now lay those over the top and block the sun from blinding my vision and now i can knock out those last few welds underneath.

there were some spots on the underside i had left raw and they had begun to rust, all that's cleaned up now and i rolled a thick coat of primer onto it.
the other day. at Lowes i found they carry rustoleum in gallons, 45$ a gl. i think i'm just gonna go with that. then i can roll the bottom with a nice thick coat, take a brush to all the nooks and cranny's, then thin what's left and shoot the rest.

i really need this material to make my storage space now or abandon the idea..........this needs to be finished 2 months ago.

i would've been done but it started to pour. i got the landing jack all welded in and almost all of the underside welding is done. i just have to put the other step on, some gussets on the coupler pad and i'm ready for a solid coat of paint.

still haven't come across the right piece of aluminum for the storage floor, so it may go together with that galvanized sheet metal i have.

found my aluminum sheet on FB , just gotta find time to get out to meet the guy. not much done recently been raining a lot, cleared some this afternoon so i'm gonna see what i can knock this evening.

i made some conveyer at work last month for cat litter production...........anyways they sent us 6 skids of kitty litter for using to test this new line, and now they don't want it back, so i got 6 x 44# bundles of scented clumping oil dry.

i tried to get some punch list crap done on the trailer this morn b4 starting into the Kia.

last wk my girls exhaust fell apart between the CC and the muffler, it has/had studs in the CC flange and those are rotted bad but it's the muffler side that busted. tubes are different sizes so split flanges wouldn't jive and i just welded that bitch. i'da had to replace every single piece if i tried to replace 1. then few days later she's tellin me it's clunkin..........well long story short after getting under it today is..........i think the rear beam axle bushings are shot on the driver side.
i'm not findin the worth in chasin it any further since it's like the exhaust and everything i touch will break, so it's time to dump it.

about this paint job on the trailer. i'm finding out my small compressor doesn't have the CFM to run a decent HPLV paint gun since most operate up around 12 CFM. i did find a HF 64oz syphon sys that runs at about 9 CFM...that i might could handle. and the gun would certainly be easier to manipulate without a bottle on it since i may also be upside down and reaching in for some of this.

hf sprayr.PNG

masking it in the morn it's about ready for paint.
i picked up the paint today and some spirits for thinner. i'm gonna thick coat the bottom side with a roller then shoot whats left. still not sure about thar sprayer and i may end up picking up an airless sprayer. that could also shoot my decking treatment.

bottoms all done, with a nice thick coat and i ran a nice thick coat over those drive over humps too. it's ready to spray. supposed to rain today again so i'm gonna have to wait for another window of dry b4 that can happen.

i never went and got that aluminum the recent issues with the kia derailed that, but i still need it so i'll try to get it this wk, i hope i can have enough drop to make some side valances for the wheel wells too.

not sure if i like the lean of the ramps or the height, i need to see them with the jeep on there.

well it's been a shit wk with weather all over the place. her car fallin apart and i'm trying to not beat the piss out of every idiot at work......

20yrs on the job and my raise was less than 2%. everything i made last wk was tossed in the scrap bin, we lost a major local customer because of engineering mistakes. hell not even mistakes, they weren't even close to what the customer wanted. stuff i made this wk was supposed to ship fri but it was painted the wrong color, 2x. 1st white they said no red, then at time to ship they say WTF it's supposed to be yellow. i'm getting angry watchin them ruin this place.

anyways i got the trailer painted, dodging temp drops and rain all wk. what i had rolled out looked good so i didn't bother to spend for a sprayer. i rolled everything i could reach nice n thick and borrowed a quart gun from work and n beat my little compressor up shooting the corners. it's done.

i am trying to get motivated today to go get some lumber, but my girlie wants to go look at cars and it's gonna pour again tomrw.

can't catch a break in the weather, it's been total crap since last wk.

i did get the truck in the back yard between rain showers yesterday and tested the lamps..........i had 2 wires crossed in the box.........oh, no i didn't they mislabeled them, but i got it figured and all the lamps check out fine.
went over all the nuts and bolts and checked for tight and/or torque, all good.

i'm reluctant to buy any lumber, i don't have room to store it inside. this needs to be bought, fit and treated in a day or 2 in fair weather. i don't care about temps, it's the moisture i don't want. i'm on it as soon as i have a dry window to work.

Good luck getting dry treated lumber anymore. Most of the stuff I’ve bought has been so wet at the store it nearly drips waiting in line to check out

that wouldn't bug me to much as long as i knew i could get it down b4 it dried and pulled. i can't have it here under a tarp all damp and have it tweekin on me b4 it gets anchored,

I wish I could tell you what the decking was that I have on my trailer. When I'd bought it I'd asked a bunch of the local guys what I should coat or stain the deck with and everyone told me to leave it as is. I bought this trailer in 2007 and this is still the original boards.

And it sits outside in the weather. Direct sun in the summer and snow in the winter.

tryin to feel better forced myself to go get that lumber and start fitting it, weather is supposed to hold so i'll be fastening it down tomrw after a a little more trimming.
those drive over fenders didn't end up very tall after it's decked.
