Pretty common Jeep trail, which I’ve been on many times, and I know some of you are familiar with it. Anyways, I look at the picture and my first two thoughts are “what a shame that that factory hard top got ruined,” and, “man that could be a ROTM photo!” 😂

At least a light bar died. 🤣

I'm not familiar with the trail, what happened? Looks like major driver error from what the banks look like.

This is a loop called broken arrow. The jeep tours own it but they allow people to use the area recreationally. As @DaveC mentioned above, it’s called Devil’s Staircase. You’re supposed to only go down it, but a better equipped Jeep could go up it with some caution. My guess is this individual was unfamiliar with the trail, was trying to go up, gave it a little too much gas, and the rear wheels walked under the Jeep and it stood up and went front-over-rear.

Had to do a double take at the name. There is a really beautiful old growth wilderness area in Douglas county in Oregon.

Is the trail section in question? (50sec video)

I thought that was the devil's staircase.

Oddly enough.... I went up it with a 2012 wk2 overland model with ease.

Surprised a jeep flopped on it.

Yes it is. It’s a lot steeper than what it looks in the video but it’s very doable if you do it right.

Watching other people wheel, I drive like a grandma. That guy was cruising down that
That looks like one of the local Jeep rentals. He wasn’t very graceful coming down. Sounds like he was on the brakes a lot.

The problem is it’s extremely slick. You need a good rain to wash the dust and silt away and to open the pores in the rock. There’s also probably been more traffic over that staircase in the last ten years than it’s ever experienced.

Thanks... I was wondering what would make him roll over.

Just point it down each ledge and go right? Guess not lol

We used to live in Prescott, AZ for six years, and I'd take family/friends on those trails. Even with the LJ, the sphincter would tighten quite a bit!

My guess is it was driver error and likely nothing more than driving too aggressively or pure inexperience causing an inability to know the best line to take in tricky situations. I'm definitely not the master of choosing the right line in all situations, it's not easy in some situations. My lack of rollovers is from nothing more than a good combination of luck and good spotting in more difficult situations.

Went up and down that last year following some rain. Up, no real issue. Down was a slip-n-slide!
Pink Jeeps were bypassing it almost completely due to the wet rock. With too much momentum I can see this happening but gotta contol that rig! Must have been a "fun" recovery. No real good places to set up to roll it back over.

Not sure how he flopped there and in that direction. Maybe trying to turn around? I just did that trail a few weeks ago in a rental Jeep.

My run.

Hope everyone was ok.

I’ve not been around carnage that bad, but I imagine it happens fast- by the time folks realize they are in trouble it is too late.

I have a spare tire cover just like that guys but my north goes the other way... I guess I could always turn the jeep over.

I spontaneously went up and down it 3 years ago in a 2012 grand cherokee.

Ya.. going up was fairly simple. Going down... I dropped 1 wheel at a time.. walking it down.

Definitely in 4 lo.. and jeep raised up. Maybe the traction control in the wk2 made a difference.
But it wasnt very daunting at all.

Instant disqualification for ROTM - the license plate is clearly photoshopped…
