EV thread

How many of you prepare for natural disasters by storing 20+ gallons of fuel and change it out on a regular enough basis that it doesn’t go bad? Is keeping a generator on hand to charge your car more difficult?

I keep quite a bit of fuel on hand because of equipment and could easily rob from those as necessary easily I’ve got 70gal of diesel. Much less gas but could scrape up a fair amount.

If I’m bugging out the car is staying. If I’m bugging in I would try to use it. The thing I like about smaller ev stuff is the ability to use a reasonable amount of solar to power it, especially when you can swap out batteries and have spares.

To teach their own of course. Some situations differ greatly. If I’ve got a 20 gal fuel tank in my garage and some fuel cans, it’s no big deal, but if you’re in an apartment and lugging in fuel, you look like a terrorist and then you’ve gotta get a storage locker which makes you look crazier.

Me too. Would take it on drives and my dad would walk, and when the little 6v battery died he'd have to push it back. Few times of that and he tossed the little battery and put a full sized car battery in. Was way faster and never died on me!

That’s awesome

Personally I have both. Farm equipment uses a lot of fuel and does a lot of work, actually at the moment I'm incredibly low on fuel, probably 70 gal of diesel. I don't think much about gasoline, but still probably have 20gal or so around.

Just for shits, if I was seriously about to get an EV, I would figure out a good way to charge off-grid, generator or whatever is necessary. I think that kind of stuff is kind of fun. I want the ebike, because I could easily charge some ebike batteries and increase my mobility incredibly cheaply. These big batteries are a different story though for what Solar can do, but I'd figure out a good generator solution personally. Depends on a lot of factors though. Some people live in cities and have no ability to really store fuel and maybe even have a generator.

What size generator would you need to be able to charge your EV properly?

A 110 charger pulls 15a, so 2kw will cover that. Depending on the car that'll get you 4 miles of range per hour.

Home 220 chargers range from 15 - 50a, so 3-12kw continuous to cover that. Not outrageous.

But you'll burn more gas/mile doing this than just driving a similar gas vehicle.

OK. So one of the 4.5 or 5 KW gen sets with a 220V plug would work nicely. Not trying to get better mileage I was curious what it'd take if you only had a EV and had lost power for whatever reason.

Again like any article I'm sure there is some parts of this whole story missing. And I'm not bashing EV's just posting something I'd found. The headline is a little misleading since he had a Level 2 charger that would/could charge it in 24 hours.

The charging costs and the wildfire scenario are interesting.

But you must remember the Hummer actually has a WTF mode!!!

It's like everything else talked about here. Right now, they have a place and for some instances they are a smart choice. But I wouldn't want to ONLY have an EV as my only mode of transportation.

What I get from this is what has ruined TRUCKS. His comments that it steers stiff and he wished it would steer easier and then how nice it rides. I grew up riding in and driving trucks and always liked the feel of a TRUCK. Now they are pussyfied IMO.
