I am replacing my leaking water pump, and see that it seems like the water pump was eating the cylinder wall. Is this expected? Did you guys see anything like this?

Wow! What does the water pump look like? The first time I replaced my water pump I replaced it with a Crown. I was surprised to see that it had metal vanes because the OEM part had plastic. I could see how those could cause the damage you see if somehow the bearing failed and it slid into the engine casting. The Crown pump lasted two years. This time I replaced it with a Mopar that again has plastic vanes.

I believe you are looking at factory machining not water pump interference. BTW, my original factory water pump has a black anodized aluminum impeller as does the oem replacement

X2, the machining into the casting appears to be the same diameter as the water pump opening and was created when block was machined. A water pump impeller is not capable of cutting like that.
