Arizona Rock Crawling Daily Driver

abandon the underside of the frame rail altogether and mount a narrower skid inboard. the angles would/could mount to the inner frame rail for skid mounting and structural support. the top would be open . no longer need nutserts, be less material to manufacture and a couple less lb's too.

The aluminum plate also acts as a big structural gusset to the frame. On mine, when driving without out the skid and only the crossmember, I can feel how much more noodlely the Jeep is. Even on pavement.

I see what looks to be several inches of flat inboard. The skid could be supported by angles on the inboard face of the frame rails too, no?

Yes, you can do that. I chose not to because that outer corner of the frame gets beat to crap when you play hard. The better way to do it would be as you said, flange inward 3/8" up from the lower edge of the frame but that leaves the frame itself in peril. You could or I would solve it by having some 1/8" 4130 bent up and then heat treated to harden it and then run that from the side of the frame down around and lap onto the skid. Otherwise, you wind up with this-

I'm solving several problems at once. Frame is now much tougher in that area. It has more nutserts holding on the skid which are needed when you play harder. And the biggest problem I am solving which is basically the ONLY reason I did it this way is I've never seen it done before, I've wanted to do it for a long time, and since I can do it this way, I did. That is the main problem I solved. Doing something I haven't seen done before.

Are those diamond shaped plates in the last picture related at all?

The rest I'm just 😍 over.

This is really beautiful. You even rounded the edges of the skid!
