I have a 98 TJ. The parking brake works great going forward, but will not hold if it rolls backward. Any idea what might be the issue and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Gary

The design of the stock TJ drum brakes makes them work better going forward than in reverse. However, they should still work going backward.

Yours are likely out of adjustment or in need of new pads. Are they clean and free of oil?

It’s been like this since I got it several weeks ago. Unfortunately due to a recent surgery I’m not able to get out and work on it. So the brakes “auto adjust” when reversing or do is that something I need to do manually? I am very “ignorant” when it comes to disk brakes.

It’s been well over a decade since I’ve seen a stock TJ brake setup, and I can’t recall if the parking brake auto adjusts or not. I’m sure someone with actual knowledge will chime in with the answer.

But even if they do auto-adjust, the mechanism can get gunked up and stop working if not maintained. It does sound like yours could use some attention.
