I bought a 1997 TJ Auto for a very low price knowing most of the issues but as it is for my daughter I have decided to go through the entire Jeep pand either replace or restore as I go. To date I have stripped the front axle and replaced the wheel hubs, calipers, brakes axle seals, the entire front suspension, unjoints and bearrings.

now I’m on to cleaning up the front frame and applying POR15. Doing a lot of glass beading do the old parts and repainting.

the motor has 300,00 km on it and I’m trying to decide if I should run it until it dies or pull the pin and rebuild it. Im not looking for crazy power just a safe ride.

excited to be on the forum lots of great articles.

well tackled the front axle today. Removed it and removed the upp control arm bushings but one was a real pain. Cleaned up the axle and just applied POR 15. Now waiting for parts. Have ball joints, control arms output shaft seal just waiting for bearings and inner shaft seals to finish it off. Replaced the Ujoints with the spicer 760X they went in easy. balljoints Next!

Worked on my gas tank yesterday and was reading what little posts there were on fixing a dented tank. I go it out drained flushed it out and filled the tank with hot water ant let it sit for 30 minute. I then drained it and used my heat gun. It took about 40 minutes and the dent slowly popped out. Looks dam good from what it was. I cleaned it up and threw a new pump and filter.

just waiting for new tank straps and it will be like new again.

Just (re?)discovered this thread. If you learn any lessons about 97s or about SEs in the process, let us know on one of the links in my signature line.

Np, I have done a lot to my Jeep. I RE did the wire harness and I’m about to start a relay box for my headlights and other accessories. I may do a write up on it.
