Who has a B&M shifter in their NSG370 6 speed?

B&M Sport Shifter is one of my top three favorite comfort mods (along with seat risers and the mirror mod). I have an NV 3550, FWIW. The vague shifts of the OE shifter were mind numbing. I have no issues getting in gear, cold or otherwise, but getting out of second can sometimes require intent... it can be a wee bit notchy coming out of second.. that's it.

I found mine on FB Marketplace for $200, so didn't overpay and have no need to justify the expenditure, I just think the driving experience is DRAMATICALLY improved, more fun, with the B&M.

I haven't changed the transmission fluid yet.. need to do that.

‘06 TJ 6-Speed.

So this is just the B&M 46200 shifter, and a Speed Dawg shift ball, what a difference. It looks and feels great. I guess it’s true that it always feels better when you get rid of the rubber.

** This is not the short/sport shifter **

So, I've got an NV3550 and absolutely hated the shifter. Vague, mushy, throws nearly a foot long, both forward to back and side to side. Like shifting through a feather pillow. I am a shifter whore... must have had a dozen in my Audi before I got it right. Then I sold the Audi.

Congrats on the shifter upgrade. It's something that keeps you connected to the Jeep any time you drive, huge points for enjoyment-factor. Have fun.

I did the Sport Short shifter. It's sweet. Along side re-gear and the seat risers in my top three mods. And though at first sight I thought the B&M shift knob was going to be too small, after a year with it I believe it is the perfect size. I do wish I had a white one..

That looks great. From what I understand, the NV3550 short throw on shifter is one unit, where the NSG is two piece unit, the short shift that goes into the trans ($800 CDN), and a shift arm ($325 CDN).

I wish it was the same as the NV3550 as that setup looks like it works really well. I’ve read nothing but great things about it.

I don’t mind the throw but wanted to change the feel and I think this accomplished that without dropping the extra $800. The Speed Dawg knob was around $75 with shipping, it’s a bit bigger than the B&M ball. Overall I’m happy with it. I’ll probably end up getting the Sport Short shifter at some point but like this setup.

Also, I never thought or heard of seat risers. Got them on order now!

I could not get myself to justify spending $300 on a shift lever. That's why I'm running the stock lever with no issues.

My first change was to a no-name Chinesium cue ball style knob. Loved the smooth round feel and that it was white. Used that until the B&M was installed and it was the scale of the cue ball that made the B&M look and feel so small.

Yes, the B&M for the NV3550 is one piece and installation is super easy once the console is out.

I expect you'll be really happy with the seat risers. What a difference they make in visibility and leg position. Once you do then you'll likely benefit from doing the mirror mod too. With the higher seating position the rear view mirror is center of your view out the windshield. Flip it upside down. The end result is that the mirror will be higher up closer to the top windshield frame. Give you a but more visibility out the front. It does change the rearward perspective which you might not like. Good news is it is reversible..

I can understand.. Everyone has their 'thing'. Knowing what I know now, I have no problem with the price given how dramatically it changes the driving experience. I had the short shifter on my build list from day one. I was lucky to find one on FB Marketplace NIB for $200.

Coffee has not quite kicked in... I think some y,all are talking about using a different shifter/stick on the factory unit and others are talking about swapping the whole unit out

edits to put some images in on shifter

Yes that’s is correct, some are talking about changing the shifter and others about just the shift lever. nV3550 is one piece, NSG370 is two pieces.

Honestly, the lever and ball on the factory unit have made this thing so much fun to drive. Will get the short throw once this wears off

I tried using the dorman improved shifter for the nsg370 on my 2005. What is usually not pictured is the 05-06 4.0 stock nsg370 shift tower has an S bend curve to raised the shifter lever above the console. When these aftermarket shift towers are put in they do not have the S curve and just angle right out. Not having this s curve causes aftermarket shifters to put a strain on the rubber floor seal and the shifter lever to hit the console.

06 6 speed, I love my short shifter, it's the AX15 from a company called Aisin. One of my gears disappeared but I don't really miss it because the shift feel is both shorter and more precise feeling. 😉

Sorry couldn't help myself. To be honest I'd never really noticed how different they were until I owned one of each at the same time and could drive them back to back. I've also never driven one with a B&M so I can't compare.

That’s what I found when I installed the B&M … sucks, and we are not likely to get a special version just for us according to B&M

No issues with hitting anything on the NV3550. Correct that it is a single bend in the shift lever.

I have no experience with the options available for the NSG370

FWIW My brother and I both have 04's with the 5 speeds, he has stock and I have a B+M. I highly prefer shifting mine to his though again like others have said, this is subjective.

Got the seat risers in today, what a difference that extra inch makes!! Thanks for the suggestion ! Do you have any other small mod recommendations?

Do the mirror flip mod... flip your rear view mirror upside down. Gives you much more visibility out the windshield with the mirror positioned higher up.

Dang Dood! I just ran the numbers AX15 vs NSG370 on grimm jeeper and they're nearly identical 4 vs 5, 5 vs 6. Might be time to keep an eye out for a decent AX15 just to have on hand for a swap if/when the 6spd shits the bed. Might get lucky enough to find one for the price of the B&M..lol

I had the B&M 6speed shifter installed and for the first few weeks if felt awkward and too tight. The mechanics added some green ATF that sounded horrible when coasting in neutral. I added Redline and it seems much better. I decided to open the shifter area rubber and found a mess. Ripped rubber boot and a decent amount of oil pooling near the breather. I've heard of leaks but haven't heard of solutions. Before I add in the new too expensive rubber bladder and re gasket the under side of the shifter. Could this excess oil be from the breather? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
